Europe is chock-full of bucket list destinations that attract crowds year-round, from cheery Christmas markets to sunny beaches packed with visitors in summer. And with crowds come the inevitable and creative travel scams that con artists expertly execute on unsuspecting tourists.

Whenever you travel, you risk falling victim to travel scams. While such scams can affect anyone, knowing what to look for might help you avoid getting ripped off. You’re more susceptible to trickery in unfamiliar settings, after all, and scams usually have been perfected over years of trial and error.

The Most Bizarre Europe Travel Scams

Gelato in hand, you’re strolling down a street in Italy when suddenly, a woman starts loudly arguing with a street vendor. A crowd gathers as he accuses her of shoplifting. To prove her innocence, she starts to strip: Once she’s down to her underwear, the vendor apologizes, the woman leaves, and the onlookers disappear—but so have their wallets, thanks to a team of pickpockets who were working the show.

This is just one of the bizarrely inventive ways that European scam artists operate. The good news is that if you’re wise to their tricks, you can just marvel at their ingenuity. The sneakiest pickpockets look like well-dressed businessmen, generally with something official-looking in their hand. Lately many are posing as tourists with fanny packs, cameras, and even guidebooks.

No matter which country you’re in, assume beggars are pickpockets and any scuffle is simply a distraction by a team of thieves. If you stop for any commotion or show, put your hands in your pockets before someone else does (or, even better, wear a money belt).

Set-up scams are time-tested and popular. On the busy streets of Barcelona, Berlin, and Florence, you’ll find the shell game: Players pay to guess which of the moving shells hides the ball. It looks easy, but the winners are all ringers, and you can be sure that you’ll lose if you play.

The most rampant scams are more subtle, such as being overcharged by a taxi driver. Some cabbies will pretend to drop a large bill and pick up a hidden small one, then tell you that you didn’t pay enough. Others will select the pricier “night and weekend” rate on their meter, even on weekdays. To decrease your odds of getting ripped off, call for a taxi from a hotel or restaurant, or use your phone to order a rideshare instead. If you do hail a cab, choose one with a prominent taxi-company logo and telephone number. Either way, insist on using the meter, agree on a price up front, or know the going rate. If, for whatever reason, I’m charged a ridiculous price for a ride, I put a reasonable sum on the seat and say goodbye.

Whenever cash is involved, it pays to be alert. If someone offers to help you use a cash machine, politely refuse (the person wants your PIN code). If a cash machine eats your ATM card, check for a thin plastic insert with a little flap hanging out—crooks use tweezers to extract your card. Cashiers, and even bank tellers, thrive on the “slow count,” dealing out change with odd pauses in hopes that rushed tourists will gather up the money early and say “grazie.” Also, be careful when paying with large bills in restaurants and stores, and always inspect your change—in Italy, the now-worthless 500-lira coin looks like a two-euro coin.

Some thieves hang out at train-ticket machines, eager to assist you in buying tickets with a pile of your quickly disappearing foreign cash. And skip the helping hand from official-looking railroad attendants at the Rome train station. They’ll lead you to your seat, then demand a “tip.”

In Spain, women offer you sprigs of rosemary (as if in friendship) and then grab your hand, read your fortune, and demand payment. Don’t make eye contact, don’t accept a sprig, and say firmly but politely, “No, gracias.”

Just because someone looks official doesn’t mean they are. In Italy, “Tourist Police” may stop you on the street, flash bogus badges, and ask to check your wallet for counterfeit bills or “drug money.” You won’t even notice some bills are missing until after they leave.

Never open your door to “hotel inspectors.” One waits outside while the other comes in to take a look around. While you’re distracted, the first thief slips in and snags valuables off your dresser.

In Vienna, official-looking women decked out in long velvet capes roam famous sights, claiming to work for the opera house and offering to sell you tickets. The tickets are fakes, and the only seats you’ll be buying are the ones on the bus back to your hotel.

Common Travel Scams in Europe by Country

And there are still more travel scams to know about if you’re visiting Europe. Here are eight of the most common travel scams, organized by country where you’re more likely to encounter them. Study up so you don’t fall victim to “highway pirates” or bogus police officers on your next trip.

Italy, Puncturing Tires: Beware of “highway pirates” in Italy who will puncture your tires in a parking lot and follow you until you’re forced to stop. They will then pretend to help you while robbing you at the same time. If you do get a flat tire, be cautious about who offers to help you—especially around Naples—and never leave your valuables and luggage in your car.

France, False Petitions: Be wary of children who pretend to be disabled and claim to represent an accredited charity. They will ask for your signature—and then your money. Ignore them and report the scam to police. Organized scammers like this receive a 1 million euro fine in France.

Spain, Fake Entry Fees: Scam artists are posing with fake IDs at the Spanish border and asking for an “entry fee” into Gibraltar. There is no entry fee to pass through, so ignore anyone asking for money and keep your valuables out of sight.

Czech Republic, Impersonated Police Officers: In this grand scam, a group of “police offers” will appear and accuse you of committing a crime. They will ask to see your wallet and passport, which is against the law, so you should refuse and ask to be taken to the nearest police station instead. This will most likely make them go away. Be sure to report them to the local authorities after.

Hungary, Counterfeit Money: Taxi drivers and dingy currency exchange booths commonly pass on counterfeit bills to unsuspecting tourists. Make sure to exchange your money only at a bank or in the airport, and double check that the bills you receive are the correct currency.

Netherlands, Distraction Scams: Pay particular attention to this at restaurants in Central Amsterdam. Someone might come into the restaurant and either pretend to look for a friend or cause another distraction. Instead he or she will steal your bag right in front of you. Make sure you keep your possessions in your line of sight, and don’t leave bags or coats hanging on the back of your chair.

Croatia, Extortionate Bills: Some Croatian bars and restaurants—especially gentleman’s clubs—will add an unexplained surcharge to your bill, expecting you not to have enough cash. If you are short on funds, they’ll take you to an ATM and demand that you take out more money. It’s best to research restaurants, clubs, and bars before going, and ask your hotel (rather than taxi drivers, who may be in on the scam) for recommendations.

Poland, Phony Taxis: At airports and major tourist attractions in Poland, many unregulated drivers will pick up unsuspecting tourists and claim their meter is broken. Avoid this overcharge by only using official taxis; check for the name and number of the company on the car. Another way to check their legitimacy is by looking for a rate card.

We don’t mean to paint Europe as a dangerous place. In fact, it’s safer than America. Muggings in Europe are uncommon. Thieves want to separate you from your money painlessly. Europe travel scams are easy to avoid if you recognize them. But remember: Even the most vigilant traveler can get conned. If this happens, don’t let it ruin your trip. With the right attitude and lighter bags, you can still have a wonderful time.

Nothing puts you in the vacation mindset faster than a trip to the beach. It’s pretty impossible to be stressed when you have your feet in the sand, salt in your hair, and sun on your face.

Fortunately, you don’t have to go far to find your own little slice of paradise—there are some incredible beaches right here in the U.S. if you know where to look.

Dr. Stephen Leatherman, aka “Dr. Beach,” Director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University, releases his rankings of the best beaches in America every year.

Dr. Beach evaluates contenders on 50 categories, including sand softness, water temperature, and the number of sunny days to determine the top beaches in the country.

This year, he named St. George Island State Park in the Florida Panhandle as his top pick, saying, “This long barrier island, far from urban areas, is a favorite destination for beachgoers, anglers, and bird watchers as nature abounds.”

These are the best beaches in America, according to the list.

St. George Island State Park, Florida Panhandle, Florida

Florida State Parks

This remote barrier island is perfect for vacationers looking to get away from it all. Crystal clear water invites swimming, and the powder white sand only adds to the picturesque appeal.

Dr. Beach says he enjoys “beachcombing and shelling” at St George Island.

Where to Stay: There are no hotels located within the state park, but Buccaneer Inn is one of the closest places to stay—and it overlooks another lovely beach.

Duke Kahanamoku Beach, Oahu, Hawaii

Waikiki Beach is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful places in the world, and it draws a big number of visitors accordingly. Find some peace and quiet on the west end of Waikiki Beach at Kahanamoku Beach, which is the widest beach around—offering plenty of empty space to spread your towel.

According to Dr. Beach, “This is one of the most picturesque beaches in the USA with the iconic Diamondhead volcano in the distance.”

Where to Stay: The luxurious Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki sits on 22 acres of prime oceanfront property and even features its own saltwater lagoon overlooking Waikiki Beach.

Coopers Beach, Southampton, New York

Located in the famously tony town of Southampton, Coopers Beach earns high praise from Dr. Beach for its “grainy white quartz sand” backed by imposing sand dunes.

This beach won’t be cheap to visit—a daily parking permit costs $50 per car—but the scenery makes it worthwhile.

Where to Stay: Accommodations along Coopers Beach are primarily private homes, but the quaint 1708 House is an easy bike ride away.

Caladesi Island State Park, Dunedin/Clearwater, Florida

USA, Florida, Dunedin. Row of beach chairs on beach; Caladesi Island State Park.

Accessible only by boat or a 3-mile walk from Clearwater Beach, Caladesi Island State Park is a truly remote escape. “The white beach is composed of crystalline quartz sand which is soft and cushy at the water’s edge, inviting one to take a dip in the sparkling clear waters,” says Dr. Beach.

If you get bored sunbathing on the beach all day, there are also boardwalk paths to stroll and kayak and canoe trails through the mangroves to paddle.

Where to Stay: Sandpearl Resort is one of the closest hotels to the state park. This beachfront hotel sits on Clearwater Beach, a pretty stunning beach even if it’s not on the top ten list.

Lighthouse Beach, Buxton, Outer Banks of North Carolina

National Park Service

Part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Lighthouse Beach is no longer home to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse that it was named for (it moved inland due to beach erosion in 1999).

According to Dr. Beach, “This lifeguarded beach is the number one surfing spot on the US Atlantic Coast as the large offshore sandbanks, known as Diamond Shoals, cause wave refraction focusing wave energy on this beach.”

Where to Stay: Don’t let the motel part of the name deter you—Cape Hatteras Motel, located about a mile from Lighthouse Beach, has a high 4.5-star rating from reviewers, along with its own private beach.

Coronado Beach, San Diego, California

In a state that’s full of beaches, it’s hard to pick the best one in California, but Coronado Beach is something special.

“With its subtropical vegetation, unique Mediterranean climate, and fine sparkling sand, beach-goers flock to this beach for great ship-watching and the summer’s warm and mild surf,” extols Dr. Beach.

Where to Stay: The famous Hotel del Coronado is without a doubt the best place to stay on Coronado Beach. Even if you can’t afford the pricey nightly rates, it’s worth stopping in for a meal or a drink at this historic property.

Wailea Beach, Maui, Hawaii

Michael Brake | Adobe Stock

Thanks to Hawaii’s right-of-way law, all beaches in the state are open to the public below the high tide line. This benefits visitors to Wailea Beach, access to which might otherwise be restricted to guests of the Wailea resort complex along the shore.

Wailea Beach is classic Hawaii, described by Dr. Beach as a “white coral sand beach that gently slopes offshore and is great for snorkeling when the ocean is calm.“

Where to Stay: Admire the beach from the adults-only infinity pool at the five-star Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea.

Beachwalker Park, Kiawah Island, South Carolina

Visit Historic Charleston

In contrast to Hawaii’s egalitarian beach access policy, South Carolina’s Beachwalker Park offers entry to the only public beach on Kiawah Island. The family-friendly beach is fully equipped with lifeguards, beach chair rentals, bathrooms, a snack bar, and a boardwalk.

Dr. Beach recommends that visitors “Bring their canoes and kayaks to paddle through the tidal inlets.”

Where to Stay: When it was built, the site of the Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Resort was raised 20 feet to allow unobstructed ocean views from the ground floor, so you’re guaranteed to have a great panorama from practically everywhere on the property.

Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

If you’re looking for the ultimate beach vacation, head to Hawaii, which dominates the top ten list with three of the best beaches in the US. Poipu Beach takes the ninth spot on the list, thanks to its unique geographical features, like the natural ocean wading pool that draws families to its shores.

Poipu Beach, says Dr. Beach, is “actually two beaches in one. A tombolo, which is a narrow sand spit that extends from the shore to an island, separates the two pocket beaches.”

Where to Stay: Villa-style accommodations at Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club offer plenty of space (and important beach amenities like a washer/dryer and full kitchen) for guests to spread out.

Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts

People on Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, with surfer in the water heading towards the beach.
National Park Planner

Part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, Coast Guard Beach features a stretch of sand that was named “The Great Beach” by Henry David Thoreau. “The picturesque old Coast Guard station still sits atop the glacial bluffs,” says Dr. Beach, “allowing for a spectacular view of the Nauset Spit barrier system and bay.”

Great white shark sightings aren’t uncommon here, so keep an eye out for red flags with shark images to see if you should stay out of the water.

Where to Stay: In peak season (mid-June to Labor Day) beach parking is restricted to Eastham residents and vehicles with handicap placards. Other visitors can ride their bikes, walk, or take a short shuttle from Little Creek. The charming Inn at the Oaks is just a few minutes down the road from the shuttle pickup point.

As wildfires become bigger and more common, smoke pollution has become a way of life in many parts of the country, including places that have never grappled with the issue before. According to Ford Seeman, founder, and president of the nonprofit environmental foundation,  Forest Founders, “Climate change is disrupting life as we have been accustomed to it. Droughts and fires are causing desertification. Every season, over the last few years, we have broken records for acreage burned and economic damage caused.” Seeman says this doesn’t just affect the areas where the fires occur, either. He explains, “Changes in wind patterns have caused smoke from current forest fires to impact an incredibly large portion of the United States.”

If you live in or are traveling to, an area affected by wildfire smoke, you may have questions about what activities you can safely participate in without risking your health. To find the answers, we went to Dr. Reza Ronaghi, a pulmonologist in the division of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and Dr. William Lang, former White House doctor and current Medical Director at WorldClinic

At What Point Is Air Quality Deemed “Unhealthy”?

According to Dr. Ronaghi, it’s a good idea to follow your local news stations, weather channels, and websites like AirNow.gov for up-to-date information on your local AQI (air quality index) score. He says, “Generally, levels above 100 are unhealthy for those with lung problems” (like people with allergies). Ronaghi adds, “Levels above 150 are unhealthy for the general public.” He advises to err on the side of caution and recommends that all individuals limit their time outside when the AQI is above 100.

What Activities Are Safe in Areas Impacted by Wildfire Smoke?

Dr. Lang says that the risk level increases based on how strenuous or physically demanding an activity is. He explains, “Intense, aerobic activity has the greatest risk of adverse health effects because of the increased consumption of oxygen during these activities.”

To remain safe in areas with an unhealthy AQI, Dr. Ranaghi advises, “Avoid outdoor activities including sports.” Instead, he suggests focusing on indoor activities. Look at it as a chance to plan a family game night or binge-watch a great series.

Can You Go Camping in Areas Impacted by Wildfire Smoke?

Camping in areas with unhealthy AQI scores is not a good idea since you’ll be spending the majority of your time outdoors. Not only will those gorgeous outdoor views be obscured, but, according to Dr. Ranaghi, “You can inhale the smoke and particles.” This, unfortunately, means that it may be necessary to make alternate plans or lodging arrangements if you were planning to visit affected areas.

Can You Grill Outside in Areas Impacted by Wildfire Smoke?

Dr. Lang says stepping outside to grill food is relatively safe. He explains, “Particulates and most compounds are degraded and broken down within the acidity of the gastrointestinal tract. He adds, however, “I would recommend eating inside to avoid breathing excess polluted air.”

Will Wearing a Mask Offer Protection Against Wildfire Smoke?

Although both Dr. Lang and Dr. Ranaghi were clear that you should avoid spending time outdoors in areas where the air quality is unhealthy, there may be times when staying indoors just isn’t possible. Both doctors state that in these cases, it’s a good idea to wear a properly fitted N95 mask. Dr. Lang adds that “Regular cloth surgical masks or any other, non-fitted face covering, would not provide many benefits.” In the end, it comes down to flexibility. If you’re visiting an area impacted by wildfire smoke, be sure to monitor the AQI frequently since air quality can change throughout the day. Be prepared to change plans if necessary to keep yourself safe.

Can’t decide between a relaxing lakeside getaway or an active mountain vacation? Plan a trip to New Hampshire, home to the White Mountains and the Lakes Region, where you can have both in one weekend.

With hundreds of miles of hiking trails, 93 state park properties, and plenty of lakes and beaches to explore, the Granite State is a paradise for outdoor adventurers.

Follow this guide to plan the perfect New Hampshire summer weekend trip.

Friday

Mount Washington Hotel exterior on left. Mount Washington Hotel room on the right.

Northern New Hampshire is an easy drive from Boston—you can save your vacation time, leave after work on Friday, and arrive in time for dinner.

Check into the Omni Mount Washington Resort, New Hampshire’s most iconic hotel. The sprawling, red-roofed property can be spotted from many viewpoints in the state. This historic resort was built in 1902 and has since undergone many renovations to make it the timelessly elegant property it is today. The most recent renovation expanded the hotel to add 69 modern rooms and suites in the Presidential Wing—book a room in this section to enjoy mountain views from your private outdoor space, oversized soaking tubs, and a brand-new feel.

The Omni’s main dining room was recently updated as well. Reserve a table by the window in this elegant space (there is a dress code) for a special dinner. The dining room’s picture windows offer stunning sunset views over the mountains and surrounding forest while you eat.

Saturday

Center Harbor Inn exterior on left, Center Harbor Inn room on right.

Start your day off right with a buffet breakfast in the Omni’s main dining room, or, for lighter fare, take advantage of the Omni’s complimentary coffee service and pair a cup with a pastry (don’t miss the incredible cinnamon rolls) from the hotel’s Morsels cafe.

New Hampshire is by far the best state in New England for hiking. Experience a classic New Hampshire 4,000-footer by tackling Mount Eisenhower. Part of the White Mountains’ famous Presidential Range, this moderately challenging trek will reward you with 360-degree views at the top. The 3.3-mile (one-way) Edmund’s Path trail is the most direct route to the summit.

By the time you’ve finished the hike, you’ll be ready for a hearty lunch. Refuel at Wicked Fresh Craft Burgers in North Conway. Get the milkshake (made with local milk) and the fries (topped with fresh herbs)—you’ve earned it.

Check into the Center Harbor Inn. Perched above a private sandy beach on Lake Winnipesaukee, this hotel puts you in the heart of New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. Opt for a water-view room with a private balcony for a truly luxurious stay.

Head down to the hotel’s outdoor hot tub where you can soak your tired muscles while overlooking the water.

Walk across the street to Poggio’s Craft Kitchen & Taphouse for dinner, where chef Kaylon Sweet serves up an ever-changing menu based on fresh, local ingredients. If the weather’s nice, sit outside in the restaurant’s beautiful new biergaten space.

Sunday

Castle in the Clouds

Stroll over to Gusto’s Italian Cafe for a leisurely Sunday morning breakfast. Grab a sandwich and coffee—and don’t forget to add in one of the homemade pastries involving Nutella—and bring your feast back for a picnic on Center Harbor Inn’s private beach.

After carboloading and caffeinating, rent a kayak from the hotel and paddle around Lake Winnipesaukee before checking out.

Take a short drive to Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough, New Hampshire. Built as a private estate in 1913, this elaborate property once spanned an incredible 6,300 acres. Now, the mansion and grounds occupy 135 acres of prime real estate overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee.

Tour the carefully-preserved 16-room Lucknow estate for a fascinating example of how the wealthy lived in the early 20th century before having lunch in the on-site restaurants (housed in the converted stables).

Cap off your trip with a walk through Castle in the Cloud’s many scenic walking trails—the short (0.8 mile) Brook Walk trail takes you past seven beautiful waterfalls.

They don’t call it America the Beautiful for nothing. The most beautiful places in America include some little-known yet bucket-list-worthy natural wonders across the U.S. and its territories. These 11 lesser-known spots include lush forests, tropical islands, and towering mountains—and are sure to inspire your travels.

Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado

You probably already know about otherwordly American national park landscapes like the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone’s geysers, but what about sand mountains akin to the ones on Mars? The giant desert peaks of Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve include Star Dune, which stands 750 feet tall. Located in Colorado, Great Sand Dune is a hiking or horseback-riding challenge that’s also home to kid-friendly offerings like sand boarding and Medano Creek’s swimming hole.

Vieques, Puerto Rico

Tropical American beauty in the Caribbean is on full display in Vieques, a small island in the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico. Accessible via plane from San Juan on the mainland, Vieques is a well-preserved island with few waterfront hotels where you can hike to hidden beaches like Vieques National Wildlife Refuge’s Pata Prieta. The island is also home to friendly wild horses that roam protected areas and sometimes wander into more tourist-frequented spots. Vieques also has one of the world’s few bioluminescent bays, Mosquito Bay.

Where to Stay: El Blok Hotel

Bar Harbor, Maine

Whether you’re more at home in the 47,000-acre Acadia National Park or its cozy coastal town of Bar Harbor, Acadia’s signature New England beauty combines evergreen-capped mountains with sandy beaches and rocky coastlines. Its peaks include the highest point on the East Coast, Cadillac Mountain. If you’re more of a beachgoer than a hiker, though, there’s plenty to choose from as well, including Jordan Pond and Sand Beach Park.

Where to Stay: Bar Harbor Grand Hotel

Devil’s Bridge Trailhead, Arizona

Arizona’s Grand Canyon aside, one of the most beautiful places in America is the adrenaline-spiking hike in Sedona that includes the natural wonder of Devil’s Bridge. The hike itself is 1.8 miles round-trip and given a moderate difficulty rating. Roughly three-quarters of a mile from the parking lot, hikers are given the option of two forking paths to continue their trek, one of which will take them across the titular Devil’s Bridge.

Where to Stay: Enchantment Resort

Nā Pali Coast, Kauai

Hawaii is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places in America thanks to its unique topography and isolation in the Pacific. But one stretch of island in particular stands out: Kauai’s Nā Pali Coast. Running 15 miles along the northwest coast of Kauai, the Nā Pali Coast offers sea caves, waterfalls, and cliffs as high as 4,000 feet above sea level. See the landscape from above at the lookouts at Kokee State Park or book a helicopter tour for a true aerial view.

Where to Stay: Koloa Landing Resort at Poipu, Autograph Collection

Lost River Cave, Kentucky

You’ve probably heard of Mammoth Cave National Park, the largest underground cave system in the world, but what about Lost River Cave, also in Kentucky? An underground river in Bowling Green, the Lost River Caves are a natural wonder with intriguing history: The caves are where fugitive Jesse James hid out on his run from the law, and are believed to have also functioned as shelter to Native American tribes. Explore the cave by boat or book a zipline tour through the surrounding wilderness.

Where to Stay: Fairfield Inn & Suites Bowling Green

The Florida Barrier Reef

The only living coral barrier reef in the Continental United States is Florida’s, which stretches from the Florida Keys to the Marquesa Keys, making it the third-largest coral barrier reef system in the world. But it’s a natural wonder in danger: Florida Keys officials recently banned non-biodegradable sunscreens in an effort to save the reef from damage caused by both climate change and toxic chemicals in our oceans.

Where to Stay: Courtyard by Marriott Key West Waterfront

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Dean Fikar/Shutterstock

Yellowstone-adjacent Jackson Hole, known for its cowboy landscapes and snowy peaks, is one of the most beautiful places in the U.S. The forest-nestled valley is marked by Grand Teton National Park’s mountains, massive elk herds of the 25,000-acre National Elk Refuge, and rushing whitewater rapids on the Snake River that are perfect for rafting. In winter, Jackson Hole is also a favorite for skiing dramatic peaks like Corbet’s Couloir, one of the world’s most famous (and dangerous) ski runs.

Where to Stay: The Lodge at Jackson Hole

Multnomah Falls, Oregon

Christopher Gardiner/Shutterstock

A list of the most beautiful places in America has to include the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area’s Multnomah Falls. Tourists flock to the forest-nestled Benson Footbridge halfway up the misty falls to get close to the rushing water. Heading to the gorge early and in the rain is best, because it means you’ll get the perpetually crowded Multnomah Falls almost entirely to yourself.

Where to Stay: Columbia Cliff Villas Hotel

Denali National Park, Alaska

A favorite among National Parks Service rangers, Denali National Park is home to North America’s tallest peak. Its six million acres of Alaskan wilderness include tundra, forest, and glaciers. The park is as visited for its sprawling vistas as it is for its abundant Alaskan wildlife, from moose and grizzly bears to sheep, caribou, and 165 species of birds.

Where to Stay: The Denali Cabins

National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa

Don’t forget Samoa, a Pacific U.S. territory that’s home to a wealth of natural wonders ranging from volcanic peaks to aqua-blue swimming holes. American Samoa is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places in America, and stretches over five islands and two atolls, which are accessible without a passport if you fly direct to the capital of Pago Pago. Surround yourself with natural beauty on rainforest hikes, humpback whale watching cruises, and coral reef snorkeling at the National Marine Sanctuary via Fagatele Bay.

You might want to increase your budget for your summer vacation—inflation has hit the travel industry.

New numbers from the Consumer Price Index by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show just how much prices have risen recently. Here’s what you can expect, along with tips for saving money.

Airfare

stockphoto mania | Adobe Stock

According to the BLS, airfares in April 2023 were an average of 9.6 percent higher than they were pre-pandemic in April 2019.

How to Save: Consider taking a road trip this summer instead. Data shows that gas prices have dropped 12.2 percent year-over-year, and rental car prices have also decreased by 11.2 percent.

Hotels/Vacation Rentals

Close up of person handing over a set of keys over a hotel front desk with a bell on it

The BLS measures inflation across a variety of accommodation options for travelers, including hotels, resorts, and vacation rentals. All of these overnight accommodation types are compiled into a category called “lodging away from home.”

Room rates for lodging away from home have risen 3.3 percent over the last year, and 23.6 percent over the last two years.

How to Save: Booked a refundable reservation? Keep an eye on rates at your hotel to see if prices drop before your arrival. If they do, you can rebook at a cheaper rate for no additional cost.

Don’t forget to search for a hotel on SmarterTravel Hotels, where we offer big discounts on properties all over the world.

Dining Out

Eating away from home, whether it’s in a fast food cafe or a fine dining restaurant, now costs 8.6 percent more than it did one year ago.

How to Save: Try not to eat every single meal out when you’re on vacation. Booking a vacation rental or hotel room with a kitchenette can make it easy to prepare a quick and inexpensive breakfast. Or, try hitting the local grocery store and picking up ingredients for a picnic in a scenic spot for a cheap (and memorable) lunch or dinner.

Are you usually that person at the airport who’s sprinting to the departure gate, or are you the anxious flyer who lurks around the boarding area for hours before takeoff? If you’ve ever done either, you’ve probably asked yourself: How early should I get to the airport, really?

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) offers a general rule for average flights, but there’s no single answer to this question. The time you need to get to your gate will depend on the airport, time of day, and destination. Here’s how much time you should leave for check-in and security, and how to know when you should add (or subtract) more time.

People waiting in line at busy airport
Hanoi Photography | Adobe Stock

Domestic Flights: How Early Should I Get to the Airport?

According to the TSA, you should get to the airport two hours before your domestic flight. This leaves time for parking, shuttle transportation, check-in, and getting through security, the TSA says. If you’re skipping any of those steps (for example, if you already checked in online) and are headed for a mid-sized airport, consider shaving off a half hour.

If you have TSA PreCheck, you may be able to save yourself an hour—just make sure the airport is one that participates in the program. Also, consider cutting it a bit closer if you’re flying early in the morning—airports are typically less crowded before 9:00 a.m., and some may not even be fully functioning if you show up before 6:00, especially if they’re not a busy air hub.

Two hours might seem like plenty of time, but you may want to add 30 minutes depending on the airport and the time of year. Massive air hubs like Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson (the busiest in the country) can take 45 minutes to navigate across, even on off-peak days. And during busy holiday travel days like those leading up to Thanksgiving, it’s wise to add an hour for airports in cities.

International Flights: How Early Should I Get to the Airport?

For international travel, the TSA says you should get to the airport three hours before your flight. This is especially true for return trips to the U.S. since customs pre-screening and agriculture checks abroad can mean double the security checkpoints, which can translate to long lines even in off-peak hours. Security and customs agents can’t be rushed, and there’s no guarantee that any agent will push you to the front of the line if you’re cutting it close to departure time. You’re also less likely to be able to check in online or get a mobile boarding pass in other countries than you are in the States.

Peak Hours and Busy Airports

If you’re flying during peak hours (9 a.m. to 6 p.m.), on a weekend, or through a busy airport, err on the side of leaving too much time. Sitting in the terminal or grabbing a snack is a much smaller price to pay than a missed flight.

To calculate how early you should get to the airport, trust TSA-recommended timetables over airline suggestions—the latter has a lot less to lose, and perhaps even something to gain if you miss your flight. It’s in the TSA’s best interest to keep the airport orderly by helping you stay on schedule.

Budget extra time at the following airports. They’re all either among the world’s busiest or have U.S. Customs pre-screening abroad—which adds extra lines at your departure airport (but saves you time once you’ve landed).

  • New York (JFK)
  • Atlanta (ATL)
  • Chicago (ORD)
  • Los Angeles (LAX)
  • Dallas (DFW)
  • Paris (CDG)
  • Aruba (AUA)*
  • St. George, Bermuda (BDA)*
  • Bahamas (NAS and FPO)*
  • London Heathrow (LHR)
  • Abu Dhabi (AUH)*
  • Dublin, Ireland (DUB)*
  • Shannon, Ireland (SNN)*
  • Canada (YYC, YEG, YHZ, YUL, YOW, YYZ, YVR, YWG)*
  • Tokyo Haneda (HND)
  • Dubai (DXB)
  • Athens, Greece (ATH)

*Starred airports have U.S. Customs pre-clearance screening sites.

If you’ve ever sat in an even smaller than normal coach seat, had the same flight canceled/rescheduled multiple times, or fought with a rude customer service agent—then you know that the airline you fly with can make a huge difference in the pleasantness of your trip.

Improve your chances of having a good flight by choosing one of the airlines ranked as the best for customer satisfaction—and think twice before booking a ticket on one of the airlines that came in last.

J.D. Power just released its annual North America Airline Satisfaction Study which measures customer satisfaction with carriers across eight categories:

  • Aircraft
  • Baggage
  • Boarding
  • Check-in
  • Cost and fees
  • Flight crew
  • In-flight services
  • Reservations

J.D. Power surveyed 7,774 customers who had flown on a major North American airline within the past month from March 2022 through March 2023 to determine the airline rankings.

Customers’ feelings towards airlines varied depending on what part of the plane they were flying in—for example, United Airlines ranked as the third best carrier for first/business class customers but fell to eighth place for economy passengers.

According to J.D. Power, as airline profits have increased over the last few years, consumers have become increasingly unhappy with airlines. “If yield management were the only metric airlines needed to be successful in the long term, this would be a banner year for the industry because they are operating at peak economic efficiency,” said Michael Taylor, travel intelligence lead at J.D. Power. “From the customer perspective, however, that means planes are crowded, tickets are expensive and flight availability is constrained.”

Overall passenger satisfaction fell 7 points on the annual survey, following a huge 22-point decrease from 2021 to 2022. An increase in cost and fees was cited as the biggest factor driving flyers’ unhappiness.

On the bright side, the much-maligned airplane food seems to be getting better— customer satisfaction rankings for the food and beverage category increased 12 points overall this year.
