Nothing puts you in the vacation mindset faster than a trip to the beach. It’s pretty impossible to be stressed when you have your feet in the sand, salt in your hair, and sun on your face.

Fortunately, you don’t have to go far to find your own little slice of paradise—there are some incredible beaches right here in the U.S. if you know where to look.

Dr. Stephen Leatherman, aka “Dr. Beach,” Director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University, releases his rankings of the best beaches in America every year.

Dr. Beach evaluates contenders on 50 categories, including sand softness, water temperature, and the number of sunny days to determine the top beaches in the country.

This year, he named St. George Island State Park in the Florida Panhandle as his top pick, saying, “This long barrier island, far from urban areas, is a favorite destination for beachgoers, anglers, and bird watchers as nature abounds.”

These are the best beaches in America, according to the list.

This remote barrier island is perfect for vacationers looking to get away from it all. Crystal clear water invites swimming, and the powder white sand only adds to the picturesque appeal.

Dr. Beach says he enjoys “beachcombing and shelling” at St George Island.

Where to Stay: There are no hotels located within the state park, but Buccaneer Inn is one of the closest places to stay—and it overlooks another lovely beach.

Duke Kahanamoku Beach, Oahu, Hawaii

Waikiki Beach is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful places in the world, and it draws a big number of visitors accordingly. Find some peace and quiet on the west end of Waikiki Beach at Kahanamoku Beach, which is the widest beach around—offering plenty of empty space to spread your towel.

According to Dr. Beach, “This is one of the most picturesque beaches in the USA with the iconic Diamondhead volcano in the distance.”

Where to Stay: The luxurious Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki sits on 22 acres of prime oceanfront property and even features its own saltwater lagoon overlooking Waikiki Beach.

Coopers Beach, Southampton, New York

Located in the famously tony town of Southampton, Coopers Beach earns high praise from Dr. Beach for its “grainy white quartz sand” backed by imposing sand dunes.

This beach won’t be cheap to visit—a daily parking permit costs $50 per car—but the scenery makes it worthwhile.

Where to Stay: Accommodations along Coopers Beach are primarily private homes, but the quaint 1708 House is an easy bike ride away.

Caladesi Island State Park, Dunedin/Clearwater, Florida

Accessible only by boat or a 3-mile walk from Clearwater Beach, Caladesi Island State Park is a truly remote escape. “The white beach is composed of crystalline quartz sand which is soft and cushy at the water’s edge, inviting one to take a dip in the sparkling clear waters,” says Dr. Beach.

If you get bored sunbathing on the beach all day, there are also boardwalk paths to stroll and kayak and canoe trails through the mangroves to paddle.

Where to Stay: Sandpearl Resort is one of the closest hotels to the state park. This beachfront hotel sits on Clearwater Beach, a pretty stunning beach even if it’s not on the top ten list.

Lighthouse Beach, Buxton, Outer Banks of North Carolina

National Park Service

Part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Lighthouse Beach is no longer home to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse that it was named for (it moved inland due to beach erosion in 1999).

According to Dr. Beach, “This lifeguarded beach is the number one surfing spot on the US Atlantic Coast as the large offshore sandbanks, known as Diamond Shoals, cause wave refraction focusing wave energy on this beach.”

Where to Stay: Don’t let the motel part of the name deter you—Cape Hatteras Motel, located about a mile from Lighthouse Beach, has a high 4.5-star rating from reviewers, along with its own private beach.

Coronado Beach, San Diego, California

In a state that’s full of beaches, it’s hard to pick the best one in California, but Coronado Beach is something special.

“With its subtropical vegetation, unique Mediterranean climate, and fine sparkling sand, beach-goers flock to this beach for great ship-watching and the summer’s warm and mild surf,” extols Dr. Beach.

Where to Stay: The famous Hotel del Coronado is without a doubt the best place to stay on Coronado Beach. Even if you can’t afford the pricey nightly rates, it’s worth stopping in for a meal or a drink at this historic property.

Wailea Beach, Maui, Hawaii

Michael Brake | Adobe Stock

Thanks to Hawaii’s right-of-way law, all beaches in the state are open to the public below the high tide line. This benefits visitors to Wailea Beach, access to which might otherwise be restricted to guests of the Wailea resort complex along the shore.

Wailea Beach is classic Hawaii, described by Dr. Beach as a “white coral sand beach that gently slopes offshore and is great for snorkeling when the ocean is calm.“

Where to Stay: Admire the beach from the adults-only infinity pool at the five-star Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea.

Beachwalker Park, Kiawah Island, South Carolina

Visit Historic Charleston

In contrast to Hawaii’s egalitarian beach access policy, South Carolina’s Beachwalker Park offers entry to the only public beach on Kiawah Island. The family-friendly beach is fully equipped with lifeguards, beach chair rentals, bathrooms, a snack bar, and a boardwalk.

Dr. Beach recommends that visitors “Bring their canoes and kayaks to paddle through the tidal inlets.”

Where to Stay: When it was built, the site of the Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Resort was raised 20 feet to allow unobstructed ocean views from the ground floor, so you’re guaranteed to have a great panorama from practically everywhere on the property.

Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

If you’re looking for the ultimate beach vacation, head to Hawaii, which dominates the top ten list with three of the best beaches in the US. Poipu Beach takes the ninth spot on the list, thanks to its unique geographical features, like the natural ocean wading pool that draws families to its shores.

Poipu Beach, says Dr. Beach, is “actually two beaches in one. A tombolo, which is a narrow sand spit that extends from the shore to an island, separates the two pocket beaches.”

Where to Stay: Villa-style accommodations at Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club offer plenty of space (and important beach amenities like a washer/dryer and full kitchen) for guests to spread out.

Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts

People on Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, with surfer in the water heading towards the beach.
National Park Planner

Part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, Coast Guard Beach features a stretch of sand that was named “The Great Beach” by Henry David Thoreau. “The picturesque old Coast Guard station still sits atop the glacial bluffs,” says Dr. Beach, “allowing for a spectacular view of the Nauset Spit barrier system and bay.”

Great white shark sightings aren’t uncommon here, so keep an eye out for red flags with shark images to see if you should stay out of the water.

Where to Stay: In peak season (mid-June to Labor Day) beach parking is restricted to Eastham residents and vehicles with handicap placards. Other visitors can ride their bikes, walk, or take a short shuttle from Little Creek. The charming Inn at the Oaks is just a few minutes down the road from the shuttle pickup point.

Can’t decide between a relaxing lakeside getaway or an active mountain vacation? Plan a trip to New Hampshire, home to the White Mountains and the Lakes Region, where you can have both in one weekend.

With hundreds of miles of hiking trails, 93 state park properties, and plenty of lakes and beaches to explore, the Granite State is a paradise for outdoor adventurers.

Follow this guide to plan the perfect New Hampshire summer weekend trip.

Friday

Mount Washington Hotel exterior on left. Mount Washington Hotel room on the right.

Northern New Hampshire is an easy drive from Boston—you can save your vacation time, leave after work on Friday, and arrive in time for dinner.

Check into the Omni Mount Washington Resort, New Hampshire’s most iconic hotel. The sprawling, red-roofed property can be spotted from many viewpoints in the state. This historic resort was built in 1902 and has since undergone many renovations to make it the timelessly elegant property it is today. The most recent renovation expanded the hotel to add 69 modern rooms and suites in the Presidential Wing—book a room in this section to enjoy mountain views from your private outdoor space, oversized soaking tubs, and a brand-new feel.

The Omni’s main dining room was recently updated as well. Reserve a table by the window in this elegant space (there is a dress code) for a special dinner. The dining room’s picture windows offer stunning sunset views over the mountains and surrounding forest while you eat.

Saturday

Center Harbor Inn exterior on left, Center Harbor Inn room on right.

Start your day off right with a buffet breakfast in the Omni’s main dining room, or, for lighter fare, take advantage of the Omni’s complimentary coffee service and pair a cup with a pastry (don’t miss the incredible cinnamon rolls) from the hotel’s Morsels cafe.

New Hampshire is by far the best state in New England for hiking. Experience a classic New Hampshire 4,000-footer by tackling Mount Eisenhower. Part of the White Mountains’ famous Presidential Range, this moderately challenging trek will reward you with 360-degree views at the top. The 3.3-mile (one-way) Edmund’s Path trail is the most direct route to the summit.

By the time you’ve finished the hike, you’ll be ready for a hearty lunch. Refuel at Wicked Fresh Craft Burgers in North Conway. Get the milkshake (made with local milk) and the fries (topped with fresh herbs)—you’ve earned it.

Check into the Center Harbor Inn. Perched above a private sandy beach on Lake Winnipesaukee, this hotel puts you in the heart of New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. Opt for a water-view room with a private balcony for a truly luxurious stay.

Head down to the hotel’s outdoor hot tub where you can soak your tired muscles while overlooking the water.

Walk across the street to Poggio’s Craft Kitchen & Taphouse for dinner, where chef Kaylon Sweet serves up an ever-changing menu based on fresh, local ingredients. If the weather’s nice, sit outside in the restaurant’s beautiful new biergaten space.

Sunday

top: Hiking signs for different trails. bottom left: the mansion at Castle in the Clouds. bottom right: interior of the mansion with a table, couch and rug.
Castle in the Clouds

Stroll over to Gusto’s Italian Cafe for a leisurely Sunday morning breakfast. Grab a sandwich and coffee—and don’t forget to add in one of the homemade pastries involving Nutella—and bring your feast back for a picnic on Center Harbor Inn’s private beach.

After carboloading and caffeinating, rent a kayak from the hotel and paddle around Lake Winnipesaukee before checking out.

Take a short drive to Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough, New Hampshire. Built as a private estate in 1913, this elaborate property once spanned an incredible 6,300 acres. Now, the mansion and grounds occupy 135 acres of prime real estate overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee.

Tour the carefully-preserved 16-room Lucknow estate for a fascinating example of how the wealthy lived in the early 20th century before having lunch in the on-site restaurants (housed in the converted stables).

Cap off your trip with a walk through Castle in the Cloud’s many scenic walking trails—the short (0.8 mile) Brook Walk trail takes you past seven beautiful waterfalls.

Are your social media feeds filling up with snapshots of the Eiffel Tower, Colosseum, and Empire State Building? Crowds of tourists are already descending on summer popular destinations, pushing up prices and causing long lines at restaurants and attractions.

Picture this instead: a summer vacation somewhere equally beautiful—except you have it practically all to yourself. Google Flights released data showing the most-searched for destinations for June, July, and August, and we’re thinking of it as a list of places to avoid this summer.

That doesn’t mean you have to miss out if you want to travel during peak season. Instead, we’ve compiled a list of the best under-the-radar alternatives to crowded summer destinations, so you can have all the good food and scenery without fighting through busloads of tourists.

Instead of London: Bristol, England

King Charles’ coronation in May put London at the top of mind for many travelers. If you’d rather immerse yourself among locals instead of tourists, head to Bristol for the ultimate British city getaway. Small Bristol hosts an incredibly diverse food scene and is full of unique shops and restaurants. In fact, Gloucester Road, Bristol’s main street, is said to have the highest concentration of independent businesses in the United Kingdom.

Bristol will also give you a taste of English country life alongside your city break. This outdoorsy destination straddling the River Avon has plenty of opportunities for sports, including kayaking, paddle boarding, walking, and biking.

Instead of Cancún: Holbox, Mexico

Just off the north coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula lies Holbox, a small and peaceful island alternative to crowded Cancún. Holbox is full of amazing natural attractions—it’s one of the best places in the Caribbean to swim with whale sharks. Although the sharks look large and intimidating, their tiny teeth only allow them to eat small fish and plants (not humans).

Holbox is also one of the few places in the world where you witness the bioluminescent phenomenon—the waters around the island light up at night with a special glow.

Instead of Paris: Ljubljana, Slovenia

Charming cobblestone streets, stone bridges, and sidewalk cafes—visiting Ljubljana feels like Paris except it’s cheaper, cleaner, and less touristy. The city is so appealing that it was voted the Best Destination in Europe for 2022 and was the Green Capital of Europe in 2016.

Pedestrianized streets in the heart of the city beg visitors to stroll down them, popping into shops and sipping spritzes at terraces along the brilliantly green Ljubljanica River.

Ljubljana is home to a big student population, which gives the city a lively energy (and helps keep things affordable).

Instead of Orlando: Tampa, Florida

Get the theme park thrills on a budget (and with way fewer lines) by heading to Tampa instead of Orlando. Tampa has two great amusement parks located right next to each other: Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and Adventure Island water park.

Home to pristine Clearwater Beach, Tampa has plenty of free outdoor activities that don’t require a theme park ticket.

Instead of Rome: Peljesac Peninsula, Croatia

Intrepid Travel’s Rome to Amalfi is one of the company’s most-booked tours for American travelers this summer. Since Rome was the fifth-most searched destination on Google Flights for the season, you can definitely expect crowds.

Ivan Svacov, Intrepid Deputy Operations Manager, Southeast Europe, recommends Croatia’s Pelijesac peninsula as a less-visited European alternative. “Being Croatian I would naturally start with praising the unmatched beauty of the Adriatic coast,” extols Svacov. “Peljesac peninsula was recently connected to the mainland for the first time with a bridge and has become even more accessible.”

Svacov cites the region’s wineries, famous seafood, and outdoor sports (including windsurfing in Vinjerac and hiking) as reasons to visit.

Instead of New York City: Chicago, Illinois

Even New Yorkers don’t want to be in the city in the summer—locals flock to seaside destinations like the Hamptons in an effort to escape the stifling heat. Chicago’s lakefront location makes it the better choice for an urban vacation.

Chicago comes alive in the summer as locals embrace the sunshine after a long cold winter. With fun events like the Hyde Park Summer Fest and the Old Town Art Fair happening nearly every week, you’ll never be bored in the summer.

Outdoor patios and rooftops open for the summer, expanding the city’s famous dining scene even further.

Instead of Las Vegas: Palm Springs, California

You can still have casinos, hotel pool parties, and live shows—just without the crowds—if you choose Palm Springs over Las Vegas. This resort town has more of a relaxing, luxurious vibe compared to Vegas’ glitzy party city reputation, but you’ll still find plenty of action here.

Palm Springs boasts world-class golf courses, five-star restaurants, and natural hot springs that will appeal to every type of traveler.

Instead of Tokyo: Seoul, Korea

Skyline of Seoul, South Korea at sunset

Your dollar will go far in both Tokyo and Seoul, but you’ll find the best value for your money in South Korea’s capital. The vibrant city of Seoul has plenty to explore, from a thriving food scene (with options for any budget) to ancient culture and modern art.

Seoul’s public transportation system is consistently named one of the best in the world—it’s clean, fast, and affordable, making it easy to explore the outer reaches of the city.

Instead of Seattle: Portland, Oregon

Skyline of downtown Portland, Oregon at sunset

Seattle may be bigger in size, but Portland is the better bet for visitors looking for an eclectic city experience. Portland’s small size and unique neighborhoods make it extremely walkable (or bikeable, thanks to an extensive network of cycling lanes) and you’ll be sure to discover a charming coffee shop or boutique bookstore on every corner as you wander.

Nicknamed the City of Roses, Portland is at its best in the summer, when the city’s lush green spaces and gardens are in bloom.

Sit outside at a microbrewery patio and sample the suds from one of the best beer scenes in the country, catch a live show from an indie band, or take a road trip to one of the many national parks nearby.

Instead of Miami: Fort Myers, Florida

If you want the laid-back Florida vibe without the Miami traffic and crowds, head north to Fort Myers.

Jackie Parker, Communications Manager for Lee County CVB, tells SmarterTravel, that Fort Myers is the perfect vacation spot if you’re looking for solitude. “There’s plenty of room to explore at a more laid-back pace,” says Parker. Think: “Sunset cruises on the Gulf of Mexico, fresh grouper sandwiches at your choice of restaurants, and unique places to shop.”

Tips for Escaping the Crowds This Summer

Crowds on the Spanish Steps in Rome in summer

Still scrambling to find an affordable summer vacation? Laura Burdett-Munns, Managing Director, Journeysmiths, offers these tips:

Be Flexible

Widen your search to include alternative destinations and consider traveling outside of peak season. According to Burdett-Munns, lodges and camps in Africa’s most iconic safari destinations, like Masai Mara and the Serengeti, are already sold out for the summer, so she recommends looking to lesser-known areas, suggesting instead Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park, the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, or Kenya’s diverse Laikipia region.

“Each offers an amazing safari experience, only without the crowds,” says Burdett-Munns. “There’s loads of availability still to be had in these regions, especially at the smaller, more intimate camps, which in our opinion, provide a more immersive and authentic experience.”

Staying Longer Can Save Money

You’ll get more value for your money if you’re able to extend your stay. Burdett-Munns says travelers can frequently find deals for longer trips, such as getting four nights at a hotel for the price of three.

Consider Low Season Destinations

Summer isn’t high season everywhere, so look to places where it’s low season in order to find great deals. Costa Rica, for example, has its rainest weather from May to mid-December.

During this “green season,” you’ll find better deals and fewer crowds than if you were traveling in January. This doesn’t mean you’ll be stuck inside your hotel while it downpours your entire trip—like in most tropical destinations, summer weather usually only involves an occasional light shower each day.

Research Similar Destinations

Think about what it is that appeals to you about a popular summer destination. If Alaska cruises are sold out or too expensive, Burdett-Munns advises booking an Arctic cruise instead. You’ll get similarly epic scenery with glaciers, icebergs, and wildlife sightings at a fraction of the cost.

With a lively downtown, world-class cuisine, and accessible outdoor adventures, it’s easy to see why so many people come to Banff for a visit and then just never leave. There’s so much to see and do in Canada’s most famous national park that it would truly take a lifetime to experience it all.

Although Banff is a popular tourist destination year-round, insiders know that spring is the best time to visit. The summer crowds have yet to descend—meaning you won’t have to fight for parking or restaurant reservations. Banff’s mild spring weather gives visitors a unique opportunity to experience both summer and winter activities in the same day—think a sunrise ski session followed by an afternoon hike.

This ultimate guide to Banff National Park is designed to help you craft your perfect itinerary, no matter how long your vacation is. Make planning a snap by using Banff & Lake Louise Tourism’s travel planning tool, which allows you to save experiences, accommodations, and restaurants to an interactive map.

How to Get to Banff

Downtown Banff with mountains in the background on a clear day
Caroline Morse-Teel

Banff is a scenic 90-minute drive from Calgary International Airport, a major hub where you’ll find many direct flights from numerous cities. Once you arrive, renting a car will give you the most flexibility. There are a number of rental car agencies at the airport to choose from.

However, if you’d rather relax and enjoy the scenery rather than deal with driving, there are multiple shuttles available that will take you directly from the airport to downtown Banff and beyond.

Note that all visitors to Banff National Park will need to pay a park admission fee, which costs $10.50 per day for adults. If you’re driving, make sure you display your park pass to prevent getting ticketed.

The Best Things to Do in Banff

Banff comes alive in spring when a number of attractions reopen for the year. This is the best season for multi-sport adventures as the snow melts at lower elevations, opening up hiking trails, while the ski resorts remain open nearly to the end of May thanks to a healthy stash of powder high up on the mountains.

These are the best things to do in Banff in the spring.

Discover Banff & Its Wildlife Tour

Discover Banff Tours bus stopped on a road in front of a vista of forest and mountains
Discover Banff Tours

Hop on the Discover Banff & Its Wildlife Tour when you first arrive in the national park. This scenic bus tour is the perfect first-day activity as it gives you a great overview of the area’s history and helps orient you with the layout of the area. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of some of the town’s resident wildlife.

Ski Day at Banff Sunshine Village

Snowy mountain vista at Banff Sunshine Village
Caroline Morse-Teel

With a seven-month ski season that runs from early November until late May, Banff Sunshine Village boasts the longest non-glacial ski season in Canada. Set in the heart of the Canadian Rockies (but just a 15-minute drive or shuttle from town), Sunshine Village offers incredible mountain views from every run. With 145 trails spread out over three peaks, you’ll never wait more than a few minutes for a lift—and on a spring day, you’ll have plenty of runs all to yourself.

Since Sunshine Village averages up to 30 feet of snow in a season, there will still be plenty of powder to play in during the spring.

Bike the Bow Valley Parkway

Mountains reflected in a lake on a clear blue day at Bow Valley Parkway
Caroline Morse-Teel

Under a new pilot program, a 10-mile section of the jaw-droppingly scenic Bow Valley Parkway is closed to all public motor vehicles from May 1 to May 25 and September 1 to September 30. During this time, the highway transforms into a peaceful paved path exclusive to cyclists and pedestrians.

Not a regular bike rider? Don’t let the length intimidate you. An e-bike tour will let you ride the entire path (no matter your fitness level). Book a private tour with locally-owned tour company Bikescape and you can go at your own pace (they can also come bail you out at pickup points along the road if you do get tired). Bikescape has state-of-the-art e-bikes that will let you put in as little (or as much) pedaling effort as you like.

On your ride, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife sightings, and leave plenty of time for photo stops (opportunities present themselves around practically every bend in the road).

Banff Gondola

Gondolas going up the side of Sulphur Mountain in Banff, Canada on a sunny day
Pursuit Collection

During springtime, hiking trails at higher elevations are still snow-covered, but you can still get a bird’s eye view of Banff on a trip up the Banff Gondola. The gondola smoothly whisks you up 2,292 feet to the summit of Sulphur Mountain, where you’ll have panoramic views of six mountain ranges.

After the gondola drops you off, head past the 360-degree observation and follow the boardwalk to Sanson’s Peak for the most breathtaking views.

Lake Louise Lakeshore Trail

People walking around the frozen landscape of Lake Louise with mountains in the background

Lake Louise’s world-famous emerald waters may still be hidden under a layer of ice and snow depending on when in the spring you visit, but this iconic destination is equally beautiful when frozen. Leave the crowds at the entrance behind and walk the Lakeshore trail, a just over a three-mile flat path that’s accessible year-round. You’ll be rewarded with peace and quiet, plus a different vantage point of the lake from what you normally see.

Tunnel Mountain Hike

If you want bragging rights but are short on time, a hike up Tunnel Mountain will offer you the most bang for your buck. As the smallest official mountain in Banff, the summit of Tunnel Mountain can be reached in under an hour, so you don’t have to devote a whole day to your hike. Sweeping views of Banff and the surrounding mountains are your reward for making the climb.

The trailhead can be walked to from downtown Banff and is popular with locals—so you won’t find solitude on this hike (but you also won’t need to bring bear spray).

Forest Bathing

Getting outside in Banff doesn’t always have to involve physical exertion. If you’re looking to work out your mind instead of your body, Forest Bathing might be the experience for you. (Don’t worry, swimsuits aren’t required.) The practice of Forest Bathing originated in Japan, where people head into the woods to relax and recharge by mentally soaking in nature.

A Forest Bathing session with Forest Fix will take you into quiet areas around Banff, where you’ll be led through guided meditations to help you find your inner peace.

The Best Restaurants in Banff

You’ll find a variety of restaurants in Banff to suit every craving, from cozy takeout places serving up Canada’s famous poutine to lively distilleries pouring craft cocktails. These are the best restaurants in Banff.

People listening to a tour guide describe the distilling process at Park Distillery Restaurant & Bar surrounded by metal distilling equipment

Park Distillery Restaurant & Bar

If you want a true taste of Canada, order Park Distillery’s Maple Rye whiskey, made with Quebéc maple and Alberta rye. A working distillery in the heart of downtown Banff, Park Distillery Restaurant & Bar serves up some of the best cocktails in town. Enjoy a drink on the restaurant’s sunny upper patio, where you can people-watch amidst an epic mountain backdrop.

Brazen

Fuel up for a day of adventures at Brazen, one of the best places to get breakfast in Banff. Brunch is served daily and includes options for a healthy start (like a yogurt parfait with homemade preserves) or an indulgent one (such as the French toast with a miso caramel drizzle and rum-soaked raisins).

Deer Lodge

If you’re out in the Lake Louise region of Banff National Park around dinner time, stopping for a meal at Deer Lodge is a must. The cozy log cabin dining room offers a farm-to-table menu that’s influenced by Rocky Mountain cuisine.

Dishes change frequently based on what’s in season—but if you happen to be there when the homemade ice cream is available, get it (trust us).

Hello Sunshine

A lively restaurant with private karaoke rooms may not be where you would think you’d find the best sushi in Banff, but Hello Sunshine really does have it all. This local-favorite hotspot serves modern Japanese cuisine alongside old standbys, so you can get everything from a traditional sushi roll to lobster fried rice.

Looking for a more low-key meal? Hello Sunshine also does takeout, so you can get that poke bowl to go and then head somewhere more tranquil for a picnic.

The Chimney Corner

Is a restaurant at a ski resort really worthy of making it on a list of the best restaurants in Banff? It is if it’s Chimney Corner at Sunshine Village. This eatery is a world away from the soggy heat-lamp french fries and chicken finger cuisine you find at most ski resorts.

Chimney Corner’s elevated offerings include a protein power plate (quinoa, fried feta cubes, avocado, and roasted peppers) that wouldn’t be out of a place in a fine dining restaurant. Enjoy a meal on the sunny deck overlooking the slopes, and feel powered up (rather than weighed down) for your après-lunch runs.

Three Bears Brewery

Dining room of the Three Bears Brewery & Restaraunt
Three Bears Brewery & Restaurant

Three Bears Brewery calls itself both a “restaurant in a brewery” and a “brewery in a restaurant,” because it puts equal emphasis on the food and the drinks. Watch the beer being made at the brewery in the back and then sample the suds as you feast on a hearty selection of eclectic cuisine, like a beer-brined chicken Caesar salad or a pizza made with a unique dough that’s reverse ice water fermented.

Where to Stay in Banff

Book a room at the Mount Royal Hotel to be at the heart of it all in Banff. With a prime location on downtown’s bustling Banff Avenue, the Mount Royal puts you within easy walking distance to all of the best restaurants, bars, and shops in town.

The hotel has on-site parking (a huge perk for Banff) and is also located right next to a stop for the town’s Roam shuttle in case you want to leave the car behind.

The icing on top of it all? The hot tubs on the Mount Royal’s rooftop, where you can soak tired muscles while taking in the mountain views.

How to Get Around Banff

If you’re visiting Banff in a busier season, such as summer, taking public transportation is highly recommended over driving. Parking spaces at many popular attractions are limited, and you could face long wait times just to get into places like Lake Louise. Smart travelers reserve a Parks Canada shuttle ahead of time to guarantee their seats.

You can get to all of Banff’s best attractions on the affordable Roam public bus, which runs on a regular schedule. The Roam bus also accepts advance reservations on certain routes.

Dip a hand into dark water and sparkles explode in a trail that traces your fingers’ path—this glow-in-the-dark phenomenon looks like a special effect in a movie, but it can be found in real life at a bioluminescent beach or bay.

What is Bioluminescence?

Bioluminescence is an effect found in water that is caused by a natural chemical process produced by an algae bloom of plankton. When there is motion in the water, the plankton will react by glowing brightly.

Where Can You See Bioluminescent Beaches and Bays?

If you want to see this phenomenon for yourself, put these bioluminescent beaches and bays on your bucket list.

Puerto Mosquito (Mosquito Bay), Vieques, Puerto Rico

Officially named the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world by Guinness World Records, Mosquito Bay is one of the best places in the world to witness the phenomenon. Located on the small island of Vieques, the bay is a quick ferry ride away from San Juan.

The bay has become even brighter after 2017—according to Discover Puerto Rico, the concentration of dinoflagellates (the plankton that makes the water glow) “inexplicably doubled” after Hurricane Maria.

Luminous Lagoon, Falmouth, Jamaica

Jamaica’s Luminous Lagoon is one of just four bioluminescent lagoons in the world—and, with millions of dinoflagellates, it’s the brightest. After dark, hop on a tour of the lagoon from Glistening Waters Marina and marvel as the water lights up in the wake of the boat.

Swimming is encouraged in the warm, shallow lagoon so you can watch as the water lights up with every movement you make.

Indian River Lagoon, Florida, United States

To witness bioluminescence without leaving the continental United States, your best bet is to head to the Indian River Lagoon in Florida, which was billed as “the most reliable display of naturally occurring bioluminescence” in the country by National Geographic.

Both comb jellyfish and dinoflagellates generate bioluminescence in these waters, meaning you’ll have a good chance to see it no matter the time of year.

La Parguera, Lajas, Puerto Rico

If you want a full-body bioluminescent experience, head to La Parguera—the only bioluminescent bay in Puerto Rico where swimming is allowed. Book a snorkeling tour and feel like you’re swimming through a night sky full of stars in this unique place.

San Juan Island, Washington, United States

You’ll have to time it just right to catch the magical bioluminescence in the waters around San Juan Island. The phenomenon is most active after hot and sunny days, and it’s easiest to see on dark, moonless nights.

Visit in June through September to have the best chances of experiencing bioluminescence.

When Is the Best Time to See Bioluminescence?

Bioluminescence in Jervis Bay in Australia
Bioluminescence in Jervis Bay, Australia | Gary / Adobe StockGary | Adobe Stock

Bioluminescence is most visible in the dark—so visiting during the new moon (when there is the least amount of light) is the best time.

Is It Safe to Swim in Bioluminescent Water?

Whether or not it’s safe to swim in bioluminescent water depends on the environment. Some creatures that produce bioluminescence, like the algal bloom that causes “red tide” can be toxic, and humans would want to avoid swimming with them. There can also be other environmental hazards in the water that would make it unsafe to swim in, especially at night, so always do your research before jumping in.

Many bioluminescent bays and beaches also prohibit swimming in order to protect the environment—adhere to local rules around swimming.

Tips for Visiting a Bioluminescent Bay or Beach

To have the best experience when visiting a bioluminescent bay or beach, follow these tips.

  1. Leave your phone behind—most photos of bioluminescent waters you see online are heavily Photoshopped. The phenomenon is actually very difficult to capture on camera.
  2. Visit on a dark night for the best visibility.
  3. If you’re swimming in a bioluminescent bay, shower before you visit and avoid wearing lotions and bug spray as chemicals can pollute the fragile ecosystem.
  4. Book a tour. The best way to experience bioluminescent waters is to get in them (or out on them). From glass-bottomed kayaks to snorkeling tours, there are many unique ways to see the phenomenon.

Sick of dark days and cold temperatures? We have some warm, sunny escape inspiration for you. The shoulder season month of April brings with it the advantage of fewer crowds and mild temperatures in many tourist destinations both in the US and abroad. With this comes lower accommodation and transport costs, and easier opportunities for sightseeing and touring.

These are the best warm weather destinations to visit in April.

Miami, Florida

Temperature range: 70-84; Average number of rainy days: 7

South Florida in April is exactly what you’d expect it to be: white sandy beaches, sunny skies, and fun nightlife. The warm weather and clear days make it a perfect reprieve from a snowy winter.

If you’re looking to scratch an art fix, spend half a day at Wynwood Walls arts district and grab lunch at a nearby cafe.

And if you want to extend your trip into even warmer climes, consider hopping on a cruise into The Caribbean, departing from either Miami or Fort Lauderdale.

Where to Stay: Yotel Miami
Amenities: Central location, Fitness Center, Pet-Friendly

Quepos, Costa Rica

Temperature range: 75-85; Average number of rainy days: 14

April sits on the cusp of Costa Rica’s dry and rainy seasons, letting travelers experience the best the climate has to offer. High season for tourists winds down at the end of April, so travelers may start to see fewer crowds later in the month.

Quepos is home to several beautiful beaches like the popular Playa Espadilla and the more secluded Play Biesanz, but most travelers visit the town to explore nearby Manuel Antonio National Park. Home to capuchin monkeys, lizards, sloths, and more, Manuel Antonio National Park is open to visitors everyday except Tuesdays. Dozens of guided park tours are available, from an educational night walk to adventurous canopy tours.

Where to Stay: Oceans Two Resort
Amenities: Pool & Wetbar, On-site Bar, Pet-Friendly

Sedona, Arizona

Temperature range: 42-73; Average number of rainy days: 4

April is a perfect time to visit the Southwestern United States, with daytime temps not yet reaching the scorching levels of the summertime.

Sedona offers eclectic restaurants, cafes and galleries, with well-established tourist infrastructure to make your stay comfortable.

You’ll want to rent a car and drive in from Phoenix or Flagstaff (also worth a one- or two-night stay), and drive to the many hiking trails both within and just outside of the town. One highlight is the Airport Loop Trail, which runs for three miles along the top of a big plateau with vistas of the town and dramatic mountain ranges that encircle the town.

Where to Stay: The Bell Rock Inn
Amenities: Poolside Barbecue Area, Fitness Center, Outdoor Heated Pools & Jacuzzi

Castries, St. Lucia

Temperature range: 75-86; Average number of rainy days: 10-12

April is the end of high season for tourists in St. Lucia, with the weather remaining pleasant and drier in comparison to the rainy summer months.

Take a guided hike of the Pitons, the country’s twin volcanic mountains, for incredible views of the surrounding island. Afterward, kick back with a craft beer of the same name, a local brew inspired by the mountains themselves.

Travelers visiting toward the end of the month can extend their stay into early May to experience the 30th annual St. Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival, a multi-stage musical, artistic, and cultural experience celebrating its triumphant return after a three-year hiatus.

Where to Stay: Marigot Beach Club and Dive Resort
Amenities: On-site Spa, Scuba Diving Lessons, Guided Island Excursions

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Temperature range: 74-86; Average number of rainy days: 14

If you are looking for a combination of beachtime, colorful architecture and good food, then the capital of this U.S. territory is a great place to visit. After spending the day at one of San Juan’s pristine beaches, you can head into the old town for a happy hour cocktail and a scrumptious dinner.

Bored of the beach? A day trip to El Yunque tropical rainforest, a one-hour drive outside the city, will satisfy your nature fix. There, you can enjoy a guided hike, try some ziplining, and swim in cascading waterfalls.

Where to Stay: San Juan Water Beach Club Hotel
Amenities: Rooftop Dining, Fitness Center, Outdoor Pool

Las Vegas, Nevada

Temperature range: 57-79; Average number of rainy days: 2

April is an ideal time to lounge by the pool at one of Vegas’ many hotels and resorts, catch an evening show, and try your luck at a round of blackjack. Better yet, if you can stay mid-week, you’ll escape a lot of the weekend crowds and find great rates at normally pricey hotels.

If you want to extend your trip, consider heading out to the Grand Canyon, or explore a hiking trail just outside the city.

Where to Stay: The Palazzo at the Venetian
Amenities: Cocktail Club, Seven Pools, Attached Casino

Austin, Texas

Temperature range: 59-80; Average number of rainy days: 7

Clear skies and abundant outdoor activities make Austin a fantastic destination to visit in April. With bluebonnets in bloom, take a road trip out to the Hill Country, and enjoy a wine tasting at one of the region’s many vineyards.

Back in the city, Barton Springs Pool is a must-do activity in April. It’s a natural pool located close to downtown with views of the skyline, and the water temperature is a constant 68 degrees year-round. Pro Tip: To avoid long lines, go to the South (rather than North) Entrance of the pool.

After your swim, check out nearby Terry Black’s Barbecue for lunch, and then enjoy an afternoon of shopping along hip South Congress Avenue.

Where to Stay: Fairmont Austin
Amenities: 1,000+ Guest Rooms, Award-Winning Spa, Complimentary Mountain Bike Rental

Negril, Jamaica

Temperature range: 76-85; Average number of rainy days: 8

When vacationers picture their perfect Jamaican getaway, the area that comes to mind is almost certainly Negril. Negril’s beautiful beaches, resorts, and laid-back atmosphere coupled with weather that rarely dips below 80 degrees makes this area ideal for those looking to defrost and unwind from the long winter months.

Here, relaxation is the name of the game. Take a stroll along the coastline of Seven Mile Beach, frequently touted as not only the best beach in Jamaica but in the Caribbean, named for its seven uninterrupted miles of white sands. Afterwards, kick back with a cocktail and watch the sunset from one of several beachside bars.

Carnival celebrations are also at their peak in April in Jamaica, so be on the lookout for masquerades, parades, and concerts held across the country.

Where to Stay: Riu Negril All Inclusive
Amenities: Beach-Volleyball and Tennis Courts, Water Sports, Swim-Up & Poolside Bars

New Orleans, Louisiana

Temperature range: 61-79; Average number of rainy days: 4

April in The Big Easy is jam-packed with festivals, food, and fine weather. Sweltering summer temperatures and humidity have yet to set in, with temperatures averaging a comfortable 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

Grab a beignet at Café du Monde, take a ride on one of the city’s iconic steamboats, and admire the colorful architecture of the French Quarter. April is also prime time for music lovers to check out the city, with The French Quarter Festival and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival both kicking off within the month.

Where to Stay: Hotel Monteleone
Amenities: Heated Pool, On-Site Spa, Fitness Center

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Temperature range: 71-82; Average number of rainy days: 9

Brazil’s second-largest city and famed party destination is a great place to visit in April, in between the summer and winter seasons that attract the most tourists.

Base yourself in beachside Copacabana, Ipanema or Botafogo to be centrally-located. Don’t miss the iconic Christ The Redeemer statue and be sure to take the cable car up to Sugarloaf Mountain for stunning city views.

Enjoy lounging on the famous Copacabana or Ipanema beaches, or head to the lesser-known Búzios, Ilha Grande and Paraty beach destinations after spending time in Rio.

Where to Stay: Fairmont Rio de Janeiro Copacabana
Amenities: 50+ Suites, On-Site Bar & Café, Pet-Friendly

FAQ

Do all-inclusive resorts in the US include alcohol?

Many offer welcome cocktails or champagne, but for the rest of your stay, you will have to pay for alcoholic beverages. Some resorts have special packages you can book that will include alcohol. The resorts that include alcohol no matter how you book are:

  • The Clement Palo Alto
  • Club Med Sandpiper Bay
  • The Ranch at Rock Creek
  • Bungalows Key Largo
  • Dunton Hot Springs

Is everything included at an all-inclusive resort?

Almost everything. Most include at least two meals (typically breakfast and dinner), your room, and most activities. Alcoholic beverages and spa treatments are usually an extra fee, as are specialized activities. Be sure to check with the resort you are booking at to see what exactly is included in your package.

Do you tip at an all inclusive resort?

Unless it is explicitly stated at the time of booking that tips are included, you should tip while staying at an all-inclusive resort, although it is not required.

Does all-inclusive mean unlimited drinks?

As mentioned above, some US all-inclusive resorts do include alcoholic beverages, but most only include water, soda, tea and coffee.

Is it wise to go to an all-inclusive resort?

For a lot of families and couples traveling, going to an all-inclusive resort is the best way to go, as that way, the trip is already paid for when you get there, and there are no surprises. It is easier to save for an all-inclusive stay since you know exactly what you will spend.

Are all-inclusive resorts worth it?

The short answer is yes, they are, if you are looking for a resort vacation. Having everything paid for, and all of your activities during your vacation in one place may be the perfect vacation for some people. The costs that can incur while you are on vacation are many, so knowing exactly what you are paying can be a relief to some, and make it well worth the money.

Some travelers start dreaming about booking an island vacation the moment the temperature drops. Then there are those who embrace the cold temperatures, with all-day skiing and hikes in powdery winter wonderlands. If you’re dreaming of snowball fights and sledding, book a trip to one of these destinations that see the most snowfall in the country.

Erie, Pennsylvania

Man skiing at Mount Pleasant of Edinboro
Mount Pleasant of Edinboro

This year, Erie is ranking in the top ten so far in the unscientific but fun Golden Snowglobe competition charting the snowiest cities in the U.S. This Pennsylvania town near the Great Lakes regularly gets over 100 inches of snow a year, and on Christmas day in 2017, Erie broke records with a storm that dumped more than four feet of snow.

What to do: You’ve seen sand dunes, but snowy Erie is home to ice dunes. Presque Isle Bay off Lake Erie is the place to see ice peaks frozen on the lakeside beach, but admire from afar because it’s dangerous to walk on the hollow ice dunes.

For snow sports, there’s skiing and snow tubing at nearby Mount Pleasant of Edinboro (which makes snow if it’s not coming down). Or you can go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing at Asbury Woods park, complete with clinics for newbies. Another option on a snowy day: trek through downtown Erie checking out all the public art on a Sculpture Walk, then get a warm drink at Romolo Chocolates.

Where to stay: Stay right downtown on Erie’s “Millionaires Row,” where one of the stately Victorians is now home to Erie’s first bed and breakfast. The circa-1876 building that houses Spencer House Bed and Breakfast features 12-foot ceilings and ornate details, and offers rooms with private baths.

Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan

Group of people walking on snowy trails in Tahquamenon Falls State Park, Michigan
Sault Ste. Marie Pure Michigan

This town located between Lake Superior and Lake Huron is one of the snowiest places in Michigan, and that’s saying something. Sault Ste. Marie once was dubbed “the nation’s snow capital” and in 1995, the annual snowfall topped 200 inches after a massive five-day snowstorm dumped 62 inches. On average, Sault Ste. Marie sees nearly 120 inches of snowfall annually.

What to do: Hardy folks enjoy snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the wilderness here, and snowmobiling is big too. There’s even lantern-lit snowshoeing for the really adventurous. The town’s tourism board recommends winter as an ideal time to see the Tahquamenon Falls, where the tannin-enriched, root beer-colored rapids really stand out against the frozen landscape.

Where to stay: The very old-school Hotel Ojibway near downtown Sault Ste. Marie dates back to 1927, overlooking the historic Soo Locks. The pet-friendly hotel once played host to President George H. W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush.

Caribou, Maine

This city at the tip of Maine is the most northeastern city in the United States, and one of the snowiest places in America. In the winter of 2021-2022, it racked up nearly 90 inches of snow.

What to do: Travelers make the long journey to Caribou’s Aroostook county’s light pollution-free skies to see the Aurora Borealis. Snowmobiling and ice fishing are also popular winter activities, or you can downhill ski in nearby Big Rock Mountain. Try to time your visit to watch the mushers at the Can-Am Crown International Sled Dog Race.

Where to stay: A red clapboard house is where you’ll find Caribou’s homey The Old Iron Inn Bed and Breakfast, decorated inside with vintage clothing irons. There are three rooms with private baths to choose from at this European style B&B, each of which comes with a freshly-made breakfast each morning.

Syracuse, New York

Lake effect snow from the Great Lakes puts chilly Syracuse in the running for snowiest big city in the state of New York and in the entire country. According to Farmer’s Almanac, Syracuse averages nearly 120 inches of snow annually.

What to do: Cold weather traditions in downtown Syracuse revolve around skating at the beautiful Clinton Square ice rink, which looks like it’s right out of a snow globe. Song Mountain is an option for skiing, or kids can go tubing at the Four Seasons Golf & Ski Center. Syracuse tries to embrace those freezing temps in February with an annual Winterfest carnival

Where to stay: Hotel Skyler Syracuse near Syracuse University occupies a grand, circa-1922 former synagogue turned LEED Platinum-certified hotel. This Tapestry Collection by Hilton boutique hotel includes quirky rooms, like a “Treehouse” two-level loft decorated with sculptural trees or a suite in the eaves of the building.

Mount Washington, New Hampshire

Omni Mount Washington Resort | New Hampshire

The Northeast’s highest peak naturally gets a lot of snow: according to Weatherbug, Mount Washington usually gets around 90 inches of precipitation a year and much of that is snow. The windy peak is also home to some of the most extreme weather conditions in the world, rivaling Mount Everest.

What to do: If you’re not an experienced climber up for trekking unpredictable Mount Washington in winter, take the Cog Railway, which still operates throughout the White Mountains in the winter. This historic train provides stops for sweeping views of the snowy skyline and complimentary hot drinks as well. Besides Nordic skiing, tubing, snowshoeing, and alpine skiing, winter activities in the Omni Mount Washington’s Bretton Woods include sleigh rides and even zipline tours over the white-covered treetops.

Where to stay: Check in to the Omni Mount Washington Resort, built in 1902 as a grand hotel for Boston’s upper crust. Its red roof silhouetted against snowy mountains make this an icon, and the luxury hotel recently underwent a stunning renovation. After winter exploring, hit the top-notch spa with hot tubs and heated outdoor and indoor pools.

Mount Rainier, Washington

Mount Rainier National Park’s Paradise area has a strong claim for the snowiest place on Earth where snow is regularly recorded, according to the National Parks Conservation Association. This national park averages more than 640 inches of snowfall a year, and in the winter of 1971-1972, an amazing 1,122 inches of snow fell.

What to do: The hardiest snow-loving outdoorsy folk can go for winter camping. Other options in the Rainier area include snowshoe walks with rangers, visits to the Paradise Sledding Area, and skiing or snowboarding. You can even watch animals gather for winter feeding of elk and bighorn sheep.

Where to stay: Take in amazing views of Mount Rainier from the National Park Inn, located in the forest of Longmire. There are 25 rooms in this rustic, historic inn, along with a dining room, lounge, and gift shop.

Burlington, Vermont

Out of all the US states, Vermont takes the title of the snowiest, with around 89 inches of snow per year. Although known for its stunning fall foliage, Burlington has a lot to offer travelers in search of a winter wonderland.

What to Do: During the winter months, Church Street Marketplace—the town’s year-round open-air mall—comes alive with holiday lights and seasonal events. Check off everyone on your souvenir shopping list, then cozy up and enjoy a craft beer at Foam Brewers or Burlington Brewing Company. For outdoor enthusiasts, there are plenty of options for skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating in the area.

Where to Stay: Hotel Vermont is centrally located in downtown and just an eight minute walk from Church Street Marketplace. It has 125 rooms, a high-tech fitness center, a wellness center, and a “bedtime menu” from which guests can order cozy amenities from a hot toddy to a Vermont Teddy Bear.

Flagstaff, Arizona

Grand Canyon-adjacent Flagstaff is also a destination for the white stuff: this Northern Arizona town has been known to get more than 100 inches of snow a year. Even on years with lighter snowfall, this city located 7,000 feet above sea level remains a draw for wintery fun.

What to do: Go cross-country skiing or even fat tire biking at Arizona Nordic Village, or hit the slopes at Arizona Snowbowl. The area’s also known for craft breweries, if you want to blow off steam after a snowball fight.

Where to stay: The Little America Hotel Flagstaff boasts its own ponderosa pine forest with hiking trails, and inside, the hotel is done up with a bit of Western flair. You can even splurge on a fireplace suite to stay cozy while the snow is coming down outside.

Valdez, Alaska

This town surrounded by Alaska’s Chugach Mountains is said to be the snowiest city in Alaska and one of the snowiest sea-level places on earth. Valdez gets a whopping 300 inches of snowfall or more each year, and in 2017, a record-breaking 10 inches of snow fell down in just one hour.

What to do: Tourists head to this very snowy place in the summer for glacier cruises. In the winter, the attraction shifts towards Northern Lights spotting, fat tire biking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and more extreme snow adventures — like helicopter skiing or ice climbing on ice falls.

Where to stay: Robe Lake Lodge is the perfect getaway for anyone who wants to feel like they’re staying in the Alaskan wilderness, but doesn’t want to rough it. Stay in the main lodge or one of their six log cabins.

Dragsholm Castle

Dragsholm Castle
dennisjacobsen | Adobe Stock

Built in 1200, the Dragsholm Castle is not only one of the oldest castles in Denmark, it is also the home to many of the longest-staying guests. Though there isn’t an exact number of spirited figures who still roam the grounds—some believe the number to be in the hundreds—there are three who make a particular impression: the Grey Lady, the White Lady, and the Earl of Bothwell.

Visitors may encounter the Grey Lady in their rooms at night, because even in her death, this grateful spirit still keeps a close eye on the castle grounds to make sure things are in order. When the Grey Lady was alive, she was believed to be a worker who suffered from a horrible toothache, which was cured by someone in the castle. She has been repaying the kind deed ever since.

The White Lady’s tale is by far more tragic, and begins with the discovery, during a renovation in the early 20th century, of a young girl’s skeleton in a white dress hidden within a wall. Legend has it that these bones once belonged to the daughter of the castle’s former owner. She fell madly in love with a commonplace worker, and when her father learned of the affair he had her locked within a room in the castle, never to see the light of day again. Her young spirit has been seen roaming the halls at night, perchance searching for her lost love.

The Earl of Bothwell, James Hepburn, a consort to Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned for murder in the Dragsholm Castle cellars, where he eventually went mad and died in 1578. Visitors can see the same pillar where the Earl was once chained, and if they’re lucky, they may even catch a glimpse of the Earl riding into the courtyard with a horse and carriage. Some visitors have even claimed to hear the sound of horses when there’s nothing there.

Today, Dragsholm Castle is a hotel, restaurant, and a museum. Rooms start around $146 per night, and include breakfast. The hotel also offers daily guided tours exploring the castle’s 800-year history.

Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast

Exterior of the Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast
The Official Lizzie Borden House

You may have heard of Lizzie Borden from the playground rhyme, “Lizzie Borden took an axe/ And gave her mother 40 whacks/ When she saw what she had done/ She gave her father 41.” However, the mystery surrounding the murders of Andrew and Abby Borden is much more complicated than a simple child’s game.

For instance, Lizzie was never found guilty for the slaying of her father and stepmother, and to this day, the case remains unsolved. Come decide for yourself what actually happened on the morning of August 4, 1892, by staying in the house in Fall River, Massachusetts, where it all took place. Choose from six rooms, including the one where Abby Borden’s body was discovered. Retrace the gruesome events by starting your morning with a breakfast reminiscent of the ones the Bordens ate as their last meal.

You may even encounter the restless spirit of Lizzie herself. Some who have stayed here have heard giggling. Others claim to feel a chill in certain spots of the house. And, those who snap photos seem to always catch an orb or possibly the faint outline of a face.

Rooms are typically in the $250 to $350 range per night, with prices known to spike during high season. However, if you’d like to learn more about the infamous murders without spending the night, you can tour the property during daylight hours for $25.

Fairmont Springs Banff

The Fairmont Springs Banff, “Canada’s Castle in the Rockies,” has seen many prestigious guests since it first opened its doors more than 120 years ago. In fact, some liked the place so well that they never left.

This is the case with Sam the Bellman, who worked at the hotel for many years. Before his death, Sam joked that he would return to the hotel he held so dearly in the afterlife. Many guests will attest that Sam kept his word.

The first sighting was by two elderly ladies who couldn’t get the key to work in their room door. Feeling uneasy because of the late hour and darkened corridor, they called the front desk for assistance and were told to wait for the bellman. However, when the bellman arrived, the ladies were already safely in their room. When asked how they managed that, they stated that the gray-haired bellman had appeared moments after they called and opened the door for them. The young bellman was bewildered since no one matching that description worked at the hotel. Since that time, the elderly bellhop with a Scottish brogue has been assisting guests and keeping a watchful eye on his hotel.

Visitors may also encounter the spirit of a young bride. Close to the time of the hotel’s grand opening in the 1930s, a groom waited in the library at the top of a candlelit, winding, limestone staircase for his true love to ascend. As she made her way up the stairs, her hem of her dress brushed against one of the candle’s flames and caused her to jump back, which sent her tumbling to her death. Guests claim to occasionally see her, still dressed in her white lace gown, dancing her wedding waltz alone, without her love.

Rooms start at roughly $400 per night, but there are plenty of package deals available to keep your heart from racing.

The Stanley Hotel

Exterior of The Stanley Hotel

Built in the early 1900s, the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, has hosted many guests, including the master of horror, Stephen King. While staying in room 217, King was inspired to write The Shining, about a grand hotel in the Rocky Mountains that possesses its guests. Though most of King’s inspiration came from his own twisted imagination, the Stanley is home to a few spirits.

The most notable ghost is the original owner, F.O. Stanley, who has been spotted in the lobby and the billiard room. His wife, Flora, who once entertained guests with her skillful piano playing in the ballroom, still plays to this day. Hotel staff have heard music coming from that room, and have even seen the piano keys moving—though the music stops abruptly once they enter.

The greatest activity, however, is said to take place on the fourth floor, especially in room 418. When the room is empty, strange noises emanate from behind the doors. Guests often report hearing children’s laughter in the hallway at night. The staff has even seen an imprint on the bed, although no one had been sleeping there.

Rooms start at around $320 per night. If you really want to get your supernatural feet wet, book the historic Night Tour during your stay. For just $30 per person, explore the haunted history of this grand hotel under the cover of darkness.

Gosforth Hall Inn

Room at Gosforth Hall Inn
Gosforth Hall Inn

Built in 1658 by Robert Copley, who was suspected of being a Roman Catholic at a time when that meant death, the Gosforth Hall Inn has long been a sanctuary for lost souls. The inn may not publicly advertise its uninvited guests, but the owners are happy to share their experiences if asked.

And there’s plenty to talk about. Some guests have seen curtains billow in a room with no wind, felt the playful presence of a child, and even met apparitions in their rooms at night.

Room 11 is not only the biggest room at the inn, but it’s also the most popular for otherworldly sightings. The room has what people believe to be a priest’s hole (a hiding place for priests during the Roman Catholic persecution). At night, guests have woken to see a man dressed as a monk or friar, sitting next to the hole. Another guest once encountered a little old lady wearing an off-white dress and hair pulled back into a bun floating above the floor by the window, who vanished the moment the guest spoke.

There’s also the tale that Copley built the upper stories from the timbers of ship wrecks found along the Irish coast. The story goes that the timbers groan in anguish for the men whose final moments were spent clinging to their sturdy wood before the sea claimed their lives. Visitors who listen carefully just might hear a few final pleas for help.

Basic rooms start at £115 (about $112 U.S.; check XE.com for current exchange rates) per night, and include breakfast.

The Marshall House

Exterior of The Marshall House
The Marshall House

Savannah has a reputation as one of the most haunted cities in the U.S., so it’s only fitting its first hotel would be a premier gathering place for restless souls. Built in 1851, the Marshall House has accommodated yellow fever victims, and was once used as a Union clinic for wounded soldiers during the Civil War.

In the 1960s, the amputated bones of patients were unearthed while renovating the hotel, and hotel guests have been reporting stories of creepy encounters ever since. For instance, some guests wake to the feeling of someone holding their wrist, much in the same way nurses would take a pulse. Others have felt the presence of a little girl rumored to be searching for her father who died in one of the rooms.

Rooms start at $219 for weekday stays during high season. If you’d rather hear the stories than experience them first-hand, you can always take a haunted pub crawl for $30. You’ll stop at many of Savannah’s eerie establishments, including the Marshall House.

Villa di Corliano

Exterior of the Villa di Corliano
Villa di Corliano

Recognized as one of the most prestigious Renaissance villas in Tuscany, Villa di Corliano’s luxury and grandeur is more than enough reason to never leave—even after the body has given up the ghost. Built in the 15th century, the building’s exterior is decorated in graffiti typical of the Florentine Mannerist Art and dating back to the 1500s.

The villa has been home to and welcomed many prestigious guests throughout its time. In fact, it is one such person that is thought to remain on the grounds to this day.

By the light of a full moon, guests have encountered a noblewoman, known as the “White Ghost,” lurking in their rooms. Some local peasants even claimed once to see her in the drive of the park leading a six-horse coach, where she stopped at the Ragnaia, or “Cobweb Corner,” to stare longingly at the villa which they believed was once her home. Known also as a good-natured spirit, she is also responsible for moving tapestries and rearranging ornaments, and a slamming door or mysteriously opened window is considered her handiwork. Occasionally the underground passageways beneath the wine cellar ring with giggling or the sound of footsteps. There is also the account of one night when the hall was filled with the thunderous sound of the crystal chandelier crashing to the floor, but when the chandelier was found, it was right where it should be without one crystal out of place.

So, who is the “White Ghost?” Speculative fingers point to the direction of Maria Teresa Scolastica Ottavia della Seta Gaetani Bocca who was married at the villa in 1755, but there is very little to support that claim. For now, her identity remains as mysterious as her presence in the villa.

Rooms start at €60-$130 (about $58-$127 U.S.; check XE.com for current exchange rates) per night, and include breakfast.

The Admiral Fell Inn

With a history dating back to the 1700s, the Admiral Fell Inn once served as a safe haven for sailors while their ships called at Baltimore. The historic hotel still maintains the same home-away-from-home appeal for all travelers today, whether they have a pulse or not.

One of the more notable supernatural occurrences happened during Hurricane Isabel in 2003, when the hotel was evacuated except for a few managers. During the night, merriment and dancing could be heard above the lobby, but the only breathing people in the hotel were on the ground floor. The next night, the noises became so loud that the floor actually vibrated.

Rooms start at around $130, but if you dare seek out these apparitions without spending the night, the hotel offers a ghost tour, which is free for hotel guests.
