What are the worst aspects of travel? For most people, packing and dragging around a heavy suitcase is the most dreaded part of a vacation. One airline wants to eliminate those headaches—and help the environment in the process.

Japan Airlines is trialing a new program called Any Wear, Anywhere that allows passengers traveling to Japan from abroad to rent clothing for their trip. According to Japan Airlines, the aim of the program is to “create an environment where travelers can use local options for all aspects of their clothing, food, and accommodation, transforming travel and business trips into more sustainable experiences.”

Japan Airlines will monitor changes to baggage weight on flights during the trial period to determine the impact of the program on the environment.

How to Use the Program

The Any Wear, Anywhere program will run from July 5, 2023 through August 31, 2024, and is open to all passengers on Japan Airlines flights to Japan.

To sign up, go to the Any Wear, Anywhere website and pick out your clothing options. There are packages available for both men and women, as well as different options for spring/fall, summer, and winter. Choose from “casual” or “smart casual” style options depending on how dressy you want to look. You’ll be able to select the sizes, as well as the mix of clothing you want included (such as five tops, three bottoms, and one jacket.) Clothes are sourced from excess retail stock as well as secondhand shops.

Rental packages start at $28 and include laundry and dry cleaning. Passengers will still need to pack other essentials, such as socks, underwear, and toiletries, which are not included.

Reserve the clothes a month in advance for a rental period of two weeks, and the items will be dropped off and picked up at your accommodation.

Border crossings can range from boring to nerve-wracking, depending on your destination. When you’re traveling between two countries, there are certain things you should never do—lest you wind up delayed, detained, or even deported.

Forget to Check Your Stamp

Travel Wild | Adobe Stock

Border agents are human too, and they can make mistakes. Before you step away from the counter, quickly check your passport to make sure that they have given you the correct arrival (or departure) stamp with the current date. If something was done incorrectly, it will be much more difficult to fix later on.

Lie

Afraid a past arrest or criminal conviction will prevent you from entering the country? Lying about it certainly isn’t going to help. Border agents generally have access to records and databases from other countries, so they will quickly be able to see if you aren’t telling the truth in response to a question.

Falsifying information can get you banned from the country entirely, either for a designated period of time or even for life.

Be Rude

Going through a round of seemingly endless questions at the border can be very frustrating. However, being rude or angry definitely won’t help matters. Remain patient and be exceedingly polite in all your interactions with border agents in order to make the entry process go more smoothly.

Take Photos

Close up of person's hands taking a photo of people's legs and luggage at the airport
simona | Adobe Stock

As you pass through border control in most countries, you’re likely to see big signs warning against taking photos or videos. Follow this direction, as snapping a picture (even if it’s just of yourself entering the country) can land you in trouble.

Border control is considered a high-security area and taking pictures/videos can make you look suspicious and bring unwarranted attention to your traveling party.

Joke Around

Jokes about smuggling drugs or never leaving the country might be funny among your friends, but if border agents overhear these comments, you’ll definitely be in trouble. Just like when going through airport security, staff at borders have to take all comments completely seriously, no matter how obvious you think it is that you’re joking.

Be Unprepared

Always do your research before you leave the country as to what you’ll need to enter your destination. Some countries only accept payments for visas or other fees in cash (in the local currency), so you should make sure you’ll have the correct amount on hand.

Consult the embassy website for the country you’re visiting to determine if you’ll need a visa in advance, proof of vaccinations, or any other requirements for entry. You certainly don’t want to be put back on a plane home right after getting off a long flight just because you didn’t have the right documents.

Imagine documenting your travels without having to ruin the moment by pulling out your phone or camera—how much better would your next trip be? What if you were able to track your lost suitcase (even when the airline has no idea where it went)—would that be a game-changer for your next big vacation?

These hot travel gadgets can help you do just that—and more. Pack these travel tech toys on your next trip for an even smoother journey.

Ray-Ban Stories Sunglasses

Ray-ban Stories Sunglasses
Ray-ban

Smart glasses have frequently been portrayed in movies as a futuristic technology, but the real-world innovation hasn’t quite caught up yet—until Ray-Ban and Meta launched their new Stories Sunglasses.

The Ray-Ban Stories look like the brand’s normal iconic sunglasses (available in classic frame shapes including the Wayfarer, Round, and Meteor styles) but hide dual 5 MP cameras in the corners of the frames. Equipped with voice control, these sunglasses let you snap a photo or record a video hands-free.

Hidden speakers let you listen to music or take calls, all without pulling out your phone. The Ray-Ban Stories’ battery lasts up to six hours, and when you need to top up the battery, the glasses case doubles as a charger.

Smartish Crown Joule Charging Cable

Smartish Crown Joule Charging Cable in pink and mint
Smartish

Tired of packing separate chargers for your phone, tablet, and headphones? Smartish’s Crown Joule Charging Cable helps you streamline things with three built-in chargers that will fit Micro-USB, USB-C, and Lightning ports.

The cable is a lengthy 6 feet long, which comes in handy for hotels that don’t have outlets near the bed or airports where you have to sit far from a charging port.

Google Pixel Fold

Want to work, read, scroll, and stream all on one device when you travel? You might want to upgrade to Google’s new Pixel Fold, a new gadget that can be used as a phone with a 5.8” screen when folded, or unfolded to be used as a tablet with a huge 7.6” display.

The 10.8 MP ultrawide rear lens is great for snapping travel photos without a tripod—simply fold the phone to act as its own stand, pose, and say, “Hey Google, take a picture.”

Apple Air Tag

This summer has been a record-breaking season for air travel, and there are plenty of nightmare stories about lost luggage. Keep an eye on your bag from afar with an Apple Air Tag. Slip it in your suitcase, and you can see where it is at all times using Apple’s Find My app.

GoPro Hero 11 Mini

When you’re on an extreme adventure, you don’t want to be weighed down by a heavy camera, pack the new GoPro Hero 11 Mini. This tiny camera takes the powerful technology found in the Hero 11 and makes it smaller, lighter, and easier to use.

Although the downsized Hero 11 Mini weighs just 5.4 ounces, it’s still extremely durable. It’s waterproof and even features a battery designed to hold up in below-freezing temperatures.

Portable Apple Watch Charger / Power Bank

The batteries in Apple Watches die notoriously quickly, so if you’re relying on yours for a long travel day, keep it charged with this portable watch charger and power bank combination.

This multi-functional charger can power up a watch or phone and has a built-in iPhone charging cable to keep things easy. The powerful battery can charge an Apple Watch up to 20 times and a phone up to two times so you never have to scramble for an outlet again.

Quiet luxury, a minimalist style that focuses on the quality of pieces over flashy brand names, is the hottest trend for 2023. The ethos behind the trend is something all travelers, from budget to first-class, can embrace—think classic investment pieces that will last for years and never go out of style.

With a timeless, understated style, these quiet luxury travel items will look classy no matter what country you’re in.

Randolph Aviator Sunglasses

Gold aviator sunglasses with tinted glass
Randolph USA

American-made eye wear brand Randolph’s sunglasses are designed to last for a lifetime—and look stylish no matter the decade—thanks to the timeless styles. It takes over 6 weeks and 200 individual steps for every Randolph frame to be handcrafted, and then they’re topped off with durable lenses that have been used by military pilots for decades.

The brand’s Aviators are particularly iconic and can be customized with a range of sizes, polarization, or even a hidden engraving.

Unbound Merino Men’s Polo

Male model in forest green polo shirt
Unbound Merino

A polo shirt that will hold its shape and not become threadbare after washing can be hard to find, but Unbound Merino’s Polo will last through years of wearing. Made from a durable Merino wool and Polyester blend, the polo features just the right amount of stretch while still delivering the benefits of Merino wool—anti-odor, anti-wrinkle, and temperature-controlling.

Pack this polo and wear it for days on end—you’ll still look pulled together.

Carl Friedrik Palissy Weekend Bag

Cognac colored leather weekend bag called the Palissy
Carl Friedrik

Spotted on the shows that sparked the quiet luxury trend, Succession and The White Lotus, Carl Friedrik’s Palissy Weekend Bag is the most elegant way to pack for a short trip. The surprisingly spacious main compartment can fit enough outfits for a weekend getaway, and three open fabric pockets help keep everything organized.

A unique curved design and upright construction helps the bag keep its shape through numerous trips (and makes it easy to pack).

Made from Vachetta leather, the Palissy is painstakingly assembled by hand in Italy, where no detail is too small to be overlooked. Every tooth in the zip, for example, is individually polished before added to the bag.

Gobi Cashmere Dress

A classic black dress never goes out of style, and a 100 percent cashmere fabric elevates Gobi’s V-Neck Tunic Dress to quiet luxury status. This dress can be styled a number of different ways so you can wear it multiple times on a trip—with tights, cinched in by a belt, or with sleeves rolled up.

Made from the finest cashmere, Gobi’s clothing will resist the pilling and fading that can be a common problem with cheaper fabrics.

Urbanista Phoenix Earphones

Urbanista’s Phoenix Headphones
Urbanista

Even first-class flyers aren’t always near a power outlet. Fortunately, you can still drown out loud passengers around you with Urbanista’s Phoenix Earphones. These solar-powered earphones come with a streamlined charging case that continually recharges when exposed to light (even artificial light).

Available in a sleek black or pretty rose color, the earphones feature active noise-canceling technology that will help you block out any sounds you don’t want to hear.

Unbound Merino Travel Dress

Steeped in history, and with a grandeur that rivals the neighboring monuments, the new Waldorf Astoria Washington DC is a welcome addition to the capital’s luxury hotel scene.

Housed in the Old Post Office, a landmark building built in 1899, the space underwent many transformations before opening as the controversial Trump Hotel in 2016. In 2022, the hotel was rebranded as the Waldorf Astoria, marking the brand’s first foray into Washington, DC.

This historic building has been painstakingly restored to its former glory and added modern updates, exceptional dining options, impeccable service, and a wealth of amenities, that make the hotel a comfortable sanctuary in the heart of the city.

The Location

Aerial view of the Capitol Building and surrounding architecture in Washington DC

The Waldorf Astoria Washington DC occupies a prime location on Pennsylvania Avenue. Famous Washington attractions, including The White House, US Capitol, National Mall, and Washington Monument are within walking distance.

Public transportation is easily accessible if you want to explore more of the city—the hotel overlooks the Federal Triangle Metro station.

One of DC’s best places to visit is actually located within the Waldorf—the former Old Post Office tower, which is one of the city’s highest observation decks, offers 360-degree views of the city for free.

Amenities

Unexpected amenities designed to anticipate guests’ every need will surprise and delight visitors at every turn.

The hotel’s spacious fitness center features state-of-the-art cardio and strength training equipment, along with key items designed to aid in post-workout recovery: chilled bottles of Evian water, scented towels, and bananas.

A team of helpful concierges is ready to assist travelers with everything from directions to restaurant reservations. Guests will receive texts throughout their stay to make sure everything is going well and to see if the concierges can be of service.

Full-sized bottles of Aesop toiletries are found in every room, and are formulated to work on all hair and skin types, so everyone can enjoy the amenities.

The Rooms

Sitting area and bedroom in guest accommodations at the Waldorf Astoria, Washington DC

The Waldorf Astoria has 263 guest rooms and suites, each of which is decorated with the hotel’s rich royal blue tones, sparkling chandeliers, and marble bathrooms.

Suites at the hotel are incredibly opulent, drawing celebrities and political powerhouses looking for a luxurious stay. The Waldorf Townhouse, a 6,300 sq. ft. suite that sprawls over two stories, is the largest suite in the city and features its own private entrance.

We stayed in the Nancy Hanks Suite, a spacious (1,645 sq. ft) apartment-style suite with a separate living room and bedroom. Tucked away within the suite are cozy nooks for working and reading that can be closed off with heavy velvet curtains for privacy (chandeliers in each keep things bright).

The room’s elegantly classic features have been updated with modern technology, including remote-controlled blackout curtains and a hidden television that rises from the foot of the bed with a touch of a button.

Named after the former Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, Nancy Hanks, who was credited with preserving the building, the suite features unique art showcasing the Old Post Office’s history.

Dining

Peacock Alley restaurant at the Waldorf Astoria, Washington DC

A variety of fine dining options make the Waldorf a must-visit destination for DC foodies.

Peacock Alley

The Waldorf’s stunning lobby, home to the in-house restaurant Peacock Alley, is worth a visit even if you’re not staying in the hotel.

Set in the hotel’s airy nine-story atrium, the soaring glass-enclosed space lets light shine down on preserved original details from the Old Post Office. The atrium’s decor changes frequently and is particularly spectacular during the holidays and Cherry Blossom season.

Against the beautiful backdrop, the Waldorf’s main restaurant, Peacock Alley serves an eclectic menu all day long that draws in locals for power lunches and post-work dinners.

Start your day off right with a healthy breakfast of fresh-squeezed orange juice and locally-sourced Virginia farm fruit salad, or indulge later in the day with a shared artisanal cheese platter, on-theme postman’s burger, and a cheekily-named cocktail like the Power Suit (gin, French vermouth, sherry, and orange bitters).

If you’re looking for something a little more exclusive to sip on, a glass-enclosed tasting room off of the lobby offers the chance to sample special whiskeys, bourbons, wines, and other hard-to-find liquors.

The Bazaar By José Andrés

Michelin-starred chef and noted philanthropist José Andrés knows how to draw in a crowd, and his restaurant at the Waldorf, The Bazaar, is no exception. This buzzy eatery is open for breakfast, lunch, afternoon snacks, and dinner, and you’ll need to book far in advance if you want to score a table at a prime time. Hotel guests may luck out with a walk-in table at the bar, which is easier to come by.

The innovative cuisine is worth the wait—expect treats inspired by Andrés’ Spanish heritage, like the tortilla de patas, as well as dishes that give a nod to the location, like “José’s Favorite Waldorf, Salad”.

Sushi Nakazawa

For a special night out, reserve a seat at the sushi counter or in the dining room at Sushi Nakazawa. The Michelin-starred restaurant offers a 20-course nigiri Omakase set menu that will delight any sushi aficionado.

The Spa

Two rooms, a massage room and the salt room, at the Spa at Waldorf Astoria, Washington DC
Waldorf Astoria Washington DC

Step into the Waldorf Astoria spa and feel your shoulders instantly drop from around your ears and your stress melt away. The spa features six private treatment rooms, a Himalayan Salt Therapy Room, and The Sanctuary (a pre- or post-treatment area with dimmed lighting, private resting cocoons, soothing water features, snacks, and beverages that eases the transition back to the real world).

Massages are personalized for each guest, with custom scents on offer to enhance the experience. Or, opt for one of the spa’s indulgent services like a Vitamin C Glow body treatment or Oxygen Boost facial.

Room rates start at around $500 per night and can be booked on SmarterTravel Hotels

Welcome to Newport’s newest luxury getaway, the Brenton Hotel. Built in 2020, this 57-room property occupies the best location in town, right on Newport Harbor.

Inside the boutique hotel, a coastal theme with nautical blue detailing evokes a relaxing seaside feel that will put you straight into vacation mode.

Guests are spoiled with unexpected and whimsical amenities from the moment they step through the doors until they check out.

The Location

Set on the corner of America’s Cup Avenue and Long Wharf, the Brenton is centrally located to the waterfront as well as downtown Newport’s many shops and restaurants.

Land and sea tours depart from stops just outside the hotel’s door, making the Brenton the perfect base for exploring the area.

Amenities

The Brenton Hotel aims to give guests a luxurious stay that’s on par with what they might have experienced visiting one of the famous Newport mansions during the Gilded Age.

Available amenities include:

  • Cruises on the hotel’s private Hinckley Picnic Boat
  • Weekly tailgate at Newport Polo for hotel guests during polo season
  • Morning yoga classes on the rooftop
  • Staff-led biking, running, and walking tours
  • Complimentary bike loans
  • Advanced access to tee times at Newport National Golf Club
  • In-room Peloton bikes delivered on demand
  • Bulgari toiletries
  • Pet-friendly perks like treats, beds, and dog-walking
  • In-room minibar with free juice and water
  • Luxury spa
  • Seersucker robes
  • Guest pantries stocked with free ice cream on every floor
  • Nightly turndown service with sweet treats

The Rooms

Stepping into one of the Brenton’s guest rooms would feel like boarding a luxury yacht if it wasn’t for the room’s spacious size, which is bigger than anything you’d find on a boat.

Nautically-inspired rooms are decorated with wood paneling, gold accents, and calming blue touches.

We stayed in a Water View King room, a truly airy 450 square foot space with a separate living/relaxing area.

The king bed itself was worth writing home about, with a handstitched mattress from Mattress Concierge draped in plush, custom-made 400-thread count Matouck bedding. From the comfort of the bed, you can watch through the room’s oversized windows as ships come in and out of the harbor.

A large living area with a desk, chair, table, and couch is perfectly situated next to the window so you can admire the view while you work or dine.

For even more space, book one of the Brenton’s two-bedroom suites, which measure over 1,200 square feet.

Dining

Dining at The Brenton focuses on locally harvested food that highlights what’s in season in New England.

The Brenton has one main restaurant, the Living Room, and a penthouse bar, The Rooftop.

The Living Room

Designed for socializing, the open and light-filled Living Room features a long bar along with plenty of low tables and cushy chairs. Open for breakfast and dinner daily, The Living Room’s small plates-style menu encourages sharing—which is a good thing, since there are more delectable-sounding options that you’ll want to try than one person can eat.

Seafood harvested from the waters just outside the windows is the star of the menu here—go for the Rhode Island Stuffies or New England Oysters served with a sake mignonette.

An innovative cocktail menu featuring drinks like the Chill Factor (a refreshing blend of cucumber, mint, gin, lime, and aloe vera) offers plenty of choices for pairing depending on what you’ve ordered to eat.

The Brenton hasn’t forgotten about its pet guests—a special Top Dogs menu is available for in-room dining and at the Living Room, featuring canine-approved dishes like grilled chicken and rice.

The Rooftop

The beautifully designed rooftop bar offers panoramic views over the water and downtown Newport. Open daily from 4 pm until sunset, the bar is stocked with craft cocktails and plenty of lounge chairs, making it the best place for a sundowner in Newport.

The large and lively outdoor space offers cornhole, foosball, ping pong, and even a six-hole putting green to keep guests entertained while they sip on spritzes and local craft beers.

Price and How to Book

Room rates start at around $230 per night and can be booked on SmarterTravel Hotels

6 Inflight Beauty Treatments You Can Do Without Looking Too Weird https://www.smartertravel.com/inflight-beauty-treatments/ https://www.smartertravel.com/inflight-beauty-treatments/#respond Thu, 22 Jun 2023 18:05:07 +0000 https://www.smartertravel.com/?p=449573 Ever rolled your eyes at the suggestion of wearing a sheet mask on a plane or giving yourself an inflight manicure? Ever rolled your eyes at the suggestion of wearing a sheet mask on a plane or giving yourself an inflight manicure? Although it’s tempting to make use of downtime on a long flight to indulge in beauty treatments, it can be awkward—or annoying to your seatmates—to try out anything too intense.

That doesn’t mean you can’t step off the plane looking beautiful rather than bedraggled—there are still some discreet and fragrance-free inflight beauty treatments you can do. Here’s how to create your own seatback spa in a way that won’t draw the attention (or ire) of everyone in your row.

Dissolving Teeth Whitening Strips

Emerge from the plane with whiter teeth to show off in your vacation snapshots. Snow’s unique teeth-whitening strips dissolve in your mouth as you use them, so you don’t have to worry about taking them off and disposing of them.

Plus, the strips feature a lavender and mint flavor that will leave your breath fresh once you deplane.

A Discreet Face Mask

Doing a sheet mask inflight will definitely get you some weird looks, but no one will be the wiser if you opt for Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask instead. This fragrance-free (for the sake of your seatmates) mask comes in a creamy lotion form that you don’t have to rinse off after applying—just rub it in and relax.

The Jet Lag mask is designed to combat typical skin issues that can occur after flying, such as dehydration and dullness.

Curl Your Hair

Have a full day ahead of you before you can check in to your hotel and shower? At least your hair can look good if you wear it in the RobeCurls Heatless Hair Curler set while on the plane.

Designed to look like a normal headband, this accessory unobtrusively curls your hair—no heat required.

Lip Mask

Lips can get so chapped and dehydrated on long flights. Take preventative measures by applying Sephora’s Lip Sleeping Mask, a heavy-duty moisturizer that melts into your lips (and doesn’t need to be rinsed off).

The tube applicator means you can apply this mask without actually touching your lips, which is what you want in the germy airplane environment.

Hydrate

Does hydrating count as a beauty treatment? Considering that dry airplane air can contribute to dry and dull skin, chapped lips, and other unfortunate effects on your appearance, we say yes.

Pack some electrolyte packets and a refillable water bottle (we love this purifying one) to make your own ultra-hydrating drink to sip on throughout the flight.

Self Heating Eye Mask

Skip the eye mask included in your inflight amenity kit in favor of one that does double duty as a beauty treatment. The Starry Eyes Eye Mask will not only block out light to help you sleep but is self-heating to help reduce eye puffiness.

Once opened, the mask will warm up within 30 seconds and last for around 20 minutes.

Nothing puts you in the vacation mindset faster than a trip to the beach. It’s pretty impossible to be stressed when you have your feet in the sand, salt in your hair, and sun on your face.

Fortunately, you don’t have to go far to find your own little slice of paradise—there are some incredible beaches right here in the U.S. if you know where to look.

Dr. Stephen Leatherman, aka “Dr. Beach,” Director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University, releases his rankings of the best beaches in America every year.

Dr. Beach evaluates contenders on 50 categories, including sand softness, water temperature, and the number of sunny days to determine the top beaches in the country.

This year, he named St. George Island State Park in the Florida Panhandle as his top pick, saying, “This long barrier island, far from urban areas, is a favorite destination for beachgoers, anglers, and bird watchers as nature abounds.”

These are the best beaches in America, according to the list.

This remote barrier island is perfect for vacationers looking to get away from it all. Crystal clear water invites swimming, and the powder white sand only adds to the picturesque appeal.

Dr. Beach says he enjoys “beachcombing and shelling” at St George Island.

Where to Stay: There are no hotels located within the state park, but Buccaneer Inn is one of the closest places to stay—and it overlooks another lovely beach.

Duke Kahanamoku Beach, Oahu, Hawaii

Waikiki Beach is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful places in the world, and it draws a big number of visitors accordingly. Find some peace and quiet on the west end of Waikiki Beach at Kahanamoku Beach, which is the widest beach around—offering plenty of empty space to spread your towel.

According to Dr. Beach, “This is one of the most picturesque beaches in the USA with the iconic Diamondhead volcano in the distance.”

Where to Stay: The luxurious Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki sits on 22 acres of prime oceanfront property and even features its own saltwater lagoon overlooking Waikiki Beach.

Coopers Beach, Southampton, New York

Located in the famously tony town of Southampton, Coopers Beach earns high praise from Dr. Beach for its “grainy white quartz sand” backed by imposing sand dunes.

This beach won’t be cheap to visit—a daily parking permit costs $50 per car—but the scenery makes it worthwhile.

Where to Stay: Accommodations along Coopers Beach are primarily private homes, but the quaint 1708 House is an easy bike ride away.

Caladesi Island State Park, Dunedin/Clearwater, Florida

Accessible only by boat or a 3-mile walk from Clearwater Beach, Caladesi Island State Park is a truly remote escape. “The white beach is composed of crystalline quartz sand which is soft and cushy at the water’s edge, inviting one to take a dip in the sparkling clear waters,” says Dr. Beach.

If you get bored sunbathing on the beach all day, there are also boardwalk paths to stroll and kayak and canoe trails through the mangroves to paddle.

Where to Stay: Sandpearl Resort is one of the closest hotels to the state park. This beachfront hotel sits on Clearwater Beach, a pretty stunning beach even if it’s not on the top ten list.

Lighthouse Beach, Buxton, Outer Banks of North Carolina

National Park Service

Part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Lighthouse Beach is no longer home to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse that it was named for (it moved inland due to beach erosion in 1999).

According to Dr. Beach, “This lifeguarded beach is the number one surfing spot on the US Atlantic Coast as the large offshore sandbanks, known as Diamond Shoals, cause wave refraction focusing wave energy on this beach.”

Where to Stay: Don’t let the motel part of the name deter you—Cape Hatteras Motel, located about a mile from Lighthouse Beach, has a high 4.5-star rating from reviewers, along with its own private beach.

Coronado Beach, San Diego, California

In a state that’s full of beaches, it’s hard to pick the best one in California, but Coronado Beach is something special.

“With its subtropical vegetation, unique Mediterranean climate, and fine sparkling sand, beach-goers flock to this beach for great ship-watching and the summer’s warm and mild surf,” extols Dr. Beach.

Where to Stay: The famous Hotel del Coronado is without a doubt the best place to stay on Coronado Beach. Even if you can’t afford the pricey nightly rates, it’s worth stopping in for a meal or a drink at this historic property.

Wailea Beach, Maui, Hawaii

Michael Brake | Adobe Stock

Thanks to Hawaii’s right-of-way law, all beaches in the state are open to the public below the high tide line. This benefits visitors to Wailea Beach, access to which might otherwise be restricted to guests of the Wailea resort complex along the shore.

Wailea Beach is classic Hawaii, described by Dr. Beach as a “white coral sand beach that gently slopes offshore and is great for snorkeling when the ocean is calm.“

Where to Stay: Admire the beach from the adults-only infinity pool at the five-star Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea.

Beachwalker Park, Kiawah Island, South Carolina

Visit Historic Charleston

In contrast to Hawaii’s egalitarian beach access policy, South Carolina’s Beachwalker Park offers entry to the only public beach on Kiawah Island. The family-friendly beach is fully equipped with lifeguards, beach chair rentals, bathrooms, a snack bar, and a boardwalk.

Dr. Beach recommends that visitors “Bring their canoes and kayaks to paddle through the tidal inlets.”

Where to Stay: When it was built, the site of the Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Resort was raised 20 feet to allow unobstructed ocean views from the ground floor, so you’re guaranteed to have a great panorama from practically everywhere on the property.

Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

If you’re looking for the ultimate beach vacation, head to Hawaii, which dominates the top ten list with three of the best beaches in the US. Poipu Beach takes the ninth spot on the list, thanks to its unique geographical features, like the natural ocean wading pool that draws families to its shores.

Poipu Beach, says Dr. Beach, is “actually two beaches in one. A tombolo, which is a narrow sand spit that extends from the shore to an island, separates the two pocket beaches.”

Where to Stay: Villa-style accommodations at Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club offer plenty of space (and important beach amenities like a washer/dryer and full kitchen) for guests to spread out.

Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts

National Park Planner

Part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, Coast Guard Beach features a stretch of sand that was named “The Great Beach” by Henry David Thoreau. “The picturesque old Coast Guard station still sits atop the glacial bluffs,” says Dr. Beach, “allowing for a spectacular view of the Nauset Spit barrier system and bay.”

Great white shark sightings aren’t uncommon here, so keep an eye out for red flags with shark images to see if you should stay out of the water.

Where to Stay: In peak season (mid-June to Labor Day) beach parking is restricted to Eastham residents and vehicles with handicap placards. Other visitors can ride their bikes, walk, or take a short shuttle from Little Creek. The charming Inn at the Oaks is just a few minutes down the road from the shuttle pickup point.
