When deciding what to pack for a cruise, you’re really packing for three distinct sub-trips: your cruise ship, which is the equivalent of a large destination resort with a controlled environment; the ports of call, where you will get out and roam around the local area; and your flights to and from your departure port. Sometimes you can solve all three problems with a single wardrobe and accessory set, but sometimes you will need completely different sets. Scroll down to the cruise packing list below to learn how to pack for a cruise as well as what to consider during all aspects of your cruise vacation.

Carry-on Items for a Cruise

According to Cruise Critic: “As you may not have access to your cabin for a few hours after boarding and your luggage can show up anytime throughout the afternoon and evening … the items in your carry-on might be the only possessions you have on your first day onboard.”

Having a change of clothes and a few day-to-day necessities in your carry-on can also be a lifesaver in the case of lost or delayed luggage. If you find yourself with no idea where your bags are or waiting to have them shipped to your next port of call, you’ll be glad to have a few extra items on hand to hold you over.

What to Pack for a Cruise: At Sea

Once upon a time, almost all cruise ships were pretty dressy, including some events calling for full formal wear. Now only a few upmarket ships still require a bit of fussing, but most of the mass-market ships, like those in the Royal Caribbean and Princess stables, are about as casual as you like. In any event, as long as you’re not out on deck, you’ll be in a comfortably air-conditioned space virtually all the time.

The first job of your cruise packing list is to determine just where on the formal-casual scale you want or have to be in, or if you want to prepare for both ends of the scale. Luckily, business casual attire (pantsuits, maxi dresses, khaki pants, and button-up shirts tend to fair just fine these days). And for those cruise lines that do have more formal nights, there are typically still buffet options for meals if you want to avoid fancier dress.

Then, decide how you want to play your wardrobe. I pack the minimum I’ll need to comply with the lowest degree of dressiness required. On the other hand, other couples I know are fully engaged with dress: The wife doesn’t want to be seen in the same outfit at dinner on any two different days, and the husband even packs his tux for the “Captain’s Dinner” event. But that’s not how everyone travels. Ultimately, it’s your call what’s most comfortable for you to wear on vacation, and therefore to pack.

Do you need to pack for the full cruise, or can you have your clothes washed or dry cleaned during your sailing? Although most big ships provide some kind of service, the specific answer to that question varies wildly among different ships: Some charge for laundry the way hotels do, some set a fixed price for a laundry bag full, some sell laundry packages prior to sailing, and a few offer self-service washers and dryers.

But no matter how you do it, you’ll definitely pay more for doing laundry while cruising than you pay at home. In general, large ships offer more options than small ones, and 200-passenger river cruises may provide only limited services. Again, check what your cruise ship offers before you decide how much you need to pack. Beyond the basic daily wear, pack whatever special recreational wear and accessories you’ll need. Even if you never leave the ship, you will probably want swimwear, and possibly some other specialized clothing and equipment as well.

What to Pack for a Cruise: In Port

Group of people heading toward two cruise ships docked at a sunny port
Mariakray | Adobe Stock

The situation here is obvious: You need to pack for the climate in your cruise destination—and, for most people, being active in each port. You’ll be walking around during shore excursions, and many call for specialized equipment. That means you need to pack comfortable walking shoes and clothing on your cruise, even if you won’t need them on the ship itself. Make sure you pack appropriately for any off-shore excursions.

As to how heavy/light to travel, the Caribbean is hot and steamy pretty much all the time, and the Mediterranean in summer can come close. But weather in other popular areas such as Alaska, New England, and inland European rivers is a bit more variable. Your best bet is to check the weather forecasts just before you pack for your cruise, and always be prepared for rain. For Europe and Bermuda, you should more resort-causal clothing (fair warning: Golf courses in Bermuda have strict dress codes). Some other cruise itineraries that are more casual than the norm include Hawaii, the Mexican Riviera, the Caribbean, and French Polynesia.

What to Pack for a Cruise: Everything Else

Woman with her arms outstretched at the bow of a cruise ship, overlooking the ocean
Maridav | Adobe Stock

Travelers sometimes forget that they don’t need to pack a full closet full of personal-care products and accessories in their travel toiletry kit. You can buy toothpaste, batteries, and tissues in most places around the world—and also on the cruise ship, albeit at stiff prices. Ships vary in what toiletries they offer onboard.

The latest packing challenge is with gadgets. I, for one, would have withdrawal symptoms if I couldn’t get online every day, so I would select a cruise ship with the latest internet connectivity and pack my laptop. On the other hand, if you want to get away from it all, a cruise ship is the ideal place—and you don’t have to pack any devices, converters, and such. Don’t forget your camera, and a travel extension cord can also come in handy.

Alcohol policies vary by ship (so do your research with your cruise line directly), but you may find it useful to pack a champagne corker or bottle opener.

When packing for your pre- and post-cruise flights, figure out what goes in your carry-on and what gets checked. If you’re big on collecting souvenirs and buying local handicrafts, leave room in your suitcase for what you bring home. You don’t want to get hit with paying for another checked bag or hauling both your regular carry-on and a shopping bag of loot on your flight home.

My most essential recommendation for what to bring on a cruise: Don’t get obsessive about it. Do your best and plan to cope with whatever problems you encounter along the way.

Top 10 Safety Tips for Solo Travelers https://www.smartertravel.com/top-10-safety-tips-for-solo-travelers/ https://www.smartertravel.com/top-10-safety-tips-for-solo-travelers/#respond Thu, 11 May 2023 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.www.smartertravel.com/2008/06/26/top-10-safety-tips-for-solo-travelers/ Don't be caught unawares. If you're planning to travel on your own, these top strategies can ensure a safe vacation.

The post Top 10 Safety Tips for Solo Travelers appeared first on SmarterTravel.

]]>
Traveling alone can be a liberating, inspiring, and confidence-boosting journey. The downside: solo travelers can be more vulnerable to scams or crimes.

That doesn’t mean you should let fear hold you back from planning a trip on your own—it just means you should take a few extra precautions. Follow these ten tips for solo travelers to help protect yourself when away from home.

Check Your Hotel Room

Woman walking into hotel room with rolling suitcase, backlit by the sun
Kryuchka Yaroslav | Adobe Stock

The first thing solo travelers should do after checking in to a hotel (even before checking for bed bugs) is sweep their room to make sure there are no intruders. Leave the door to your room open while you quickly and thoroughly check any potential hiding spots.

Where to look:

  • Under the bed
  • In the closet
  • In the shower
  • Behind floor-to-ceiling curtains

Pack a Doorstop

A number of hotel employees have access to keycards that will open any room on the property. Mistakes happen and another guest could be given the key to your room. Or, the lock on your door simply might not be functional. All of these scenarios are reasons why you don’t want to solely rely on your hotel room’s door lock to keep you safe.

As a secondary layer of security, pack a doorstop or a doorstop alarm that can be used to prevent anyone from opening your door from the outside. The doorstop alarm will also alert (and everyone around you) you if someone is trying to get in.

Don’t Accidentally Give Out Your Room Number

DC Studio | Adobe Stock

Solo travelers should be careful not to let strangers know where exactly they are staying. When you check in, make sure the front desk employee doesn’t say your room number out loud (have them write it on your key card envelope instead).

If you’re ordering at a hotel bar or restaurant and want to charge something to your room, write your name and room number on the check rather than saying it verbally if others are in earshot.

Don’t Let Others Know You’re Traveling Alone

You don’t have to be totally honest with pushy strangers striking up a conversation with you. If you’re feeling uncomfortable about someone asking you if you’re traveling alone, invent a friend or spouse who is “just taking a nap in the room” or who you’ll be meeting later.

Request a Room on a Higher Floor

Hotel rooms on the first floor offer an easy second entry point (through the window) for intruders. Request a higher floor to reduce break-in risks when traveling alone.

Leave Your Itinerary With a Trusted Friend

As a solo traveler, someone should know where you are just in case something goes wrong—even if they aren’t on the trip with you. Leave a detailed itinerary with a trusted friend or family member back home.

This is especially important if you’re planning on activities such as hiking on your vacation—always let a friend or even the hotel concierge know where you are going (with specifics, such as what trail you’re taking) and what time you’re expected to return, so they can raise the alarm if you don’t come back.

All travelers, solo or not, should register for the US State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program before going abroad so that the embassy can reach them in the event of an emergency.

Loud is Better Than Polite

Always trust your intuition while traveling. If you feel uncomfortable and think that someone is following you, or if someone is harassing you, you want to attract a crowd who can intervene.

The State Department advises travelers, “If you do find yourself in an unsafe situation, be loud and draw attention to yourself to deter unwanted actions/attention. Being safe is more important than being polite.”

Spend a Little Bit More on Safety

A solo traveler’s budget should always have a little bit of extra cushioning. You don’t want to be in a situation where you’re forced to make an unsafe choice because you can’t afford to do the smart option.

For example, if you don’t have a lot to spend on transportation, you may be tempted to walk alone at night in an unsafe neighborhood rather than taking a cab.

Research Your Destination

One of the best ways to stay safe as a solo traveler is by blending in. Before you travel, research your destination to figure out what locals wear—if you’re headed somewhere where people typically dress modestly, you’ll definitely call attention to yourself if you’re wearing short or tight clothing.

You’ll also want to do your research on local scams, dangerous areas to avoid, and whether public transportation is safe to take by yourself. The most reliable place to find this information is  the State Department’s country-specific travel pages

Watch Your Drinks

Solo travelers are prime targets for drink-drugging crimes. Perpetrators may slip drugs into the beverages of travelers to knock them out, and then rob or assault them. Never accept a drink from a stranger, and always watch your drink, especially at a crowded bar or restaurant.

Although it’s fun to enjoy a local cocktail on vacation, it’s best to moderate your consumption so you can remain aware and alert.

When you’re little, the idea of traveling with your mom or grandparents seems normal. As a teenager, you may not appreciate it so much. When you become an adult—and maybe even have kids of your own—it gets way better.

The Best Mother-Daughter Trips

By the time your mom or her mom reaches her golden years, you really start to appreciate the chance to travel together, because it’s easier to recognize the moments passing. Though there may be some comical generational differences in travel style, there’s no better way for women young and old to bond than traveling together on a mother-daughter trip.

Here are some of the best mother-daughter vacations to delight moms and daughters of all ages, no matter when you travel together.

Jolly Trolleys and Golden Gates: San Francisco, California

Everyone should see the magnificent Golden Gate Bridge at least once, and a mother-daughter trip to San Francisco is the perfect excuse for doing so. Bike or walk across the bridge to get out of the fog, and have lunch with a view in the whimsical town of Sausalito.

Pair a Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour with a CityPASS, which includes admission to some of the most popular Bay Area attractions, like the California Academy of Sciences and the Aquarium of the Bay, and the option to add on a cable car pass.

While roaming around Pier 39, have a bread bowl of clam chowder at Boudin Bakery, made with San Francisco’s famous sourdough bread—you won’t regret it. Nor will you regret the decadent chocolate sundae you’ll have at Ghirardelli Square after.

Where to stay: Book a room at Hotel Zoe Fisherman’s Wharf for a memorable stay central to the city’s most famous attractions.

Vinos and Velos: Cycling from Dijon to Beaune, France

Vineyard. Pommard, Cote de Beaune, d'Or, Burgundy, France

For an active vacation paired with exquisite wine and a whole lot of grandeur, try a mother-daughter bicycle tour through the Burgundy region. Explore the French countryside at your own pace while stopping along the way to taste a sampling of France’s finest fermented grapes.

Start in the historical town of Dijon at the Place de la Liberation. Pedal past rolling vineyard hills and storybook chateaus on your way to the charming town of Nuit-Saint-Georges. Take a break while you’re there to appreciate a taste (or two) of the region’s Premier Cru red wines, made from Pinot Noir grapes, and go truffle hunting at one of the local farms.

End your bike tour in the fairy tale town of Beaune. Its main square has been hosting an unmissable Saturday market since the early 13th century.

Where to stay: Stay at the The Maven at Dairy Block for an exceptionally lively atmosphere with loft-style rooms, access to shopping and dining in the city’s Dairy Block micro-district, and easy access to downtown Denver.

Sipping, Sampling, and Shopping: Denver, Colorado

With so much to offer, it’s no wonder Denver is becoming such a popular destination for mother-daughter trips. If you want to shop, dine, partake in a libations tour, take in the arts, or do all of the above, you can do it in Denver.

The city’s most popular area for strolling and shopping is the neighborhood around 16th Street Mall and Larimer Square. You can dine your way around Denver with stops at Rioja, Tamayo, Avanti, and North Italia, and then drink your way around on a boozy tour. There are plenty of guided tasting tours that will take you to places like Laws Whiskey, The Infinite Monkey Theorem Urban Winery, Colorado Cider Company, and Denver Beer Company. The Cooper Lounge in Union Station is the best place to enjoy a fancy cocktail.

Where to stay: At the MOXY Denver Cherry Creek, you’ll enjoy a fun and modern stay. The space encourages guest interaction with a full bar and an impressive assortment of lobby games, from shuffleboard to Hungry Hungry Hippos.

Relax and Rosé All Day: Calistoga, California

While Napa may get all of the shout-outs, the best place to stay in California wine country is Calistoga. It sits at the base of Mount Saint Helena, about 25 miles northwest of the town of Napa. In Calistoga, you can do all of the iconic things mothers and daughters daydream of doing on a mother-daughter trip, like getting daily spa treatments and drinking Rosé all day.

Volcanic ash, mud, and mineral baths are the specialty spa treatment of this town. What better way to celebrate the unique bond between a mother and daughter than taking a mud bath? You can also get a proper massage treatment at Calistoga Spa and Hot Springs and the recently renovated Calistoga Motor Lodge and Spa. Basically, you can walk from one end of town to the other in spa flip-flops, getting one treatment after another, and no one would blink an eye.

Take off your shoes and get stomping at Grgich Hills Estate, which offers daily grape stomping during the harvest season. Go for a royal tour and wine tasting at the Castello di Amorosa, a medieval-inspired Tuscan castle that features barrel-tasting and a torture chamber. No trip to Napa would be complete without taking a ride on the famous Napa Valley Wine Train. Book the Vista Dome for one of the most memorable meals you’ll ever have. The three-hour journey includes a gourmet meal and wine, of course.

Where to stay: You’ll find a stay at Dr. Wilkinson’s Hot Springs Resort to be reasonably priced and wonderfully retro.

Beauty and the Beach: Maui, Hawaii

Lahaina Harbor, Maui, Hawaii

There’s a reason everyone loves Maui. Whether you’re nine years old or 90, you can appreciate the wonders of this island paradise. Maui is an extraordinary place to make mother-daughter travel memories that will last a lifetime.

Drive the road to Hana, hike the Bamboo Forest, go snorkeling with sea turtles at Maluaka Beach, catch the sunrise at Haleakala National Park, and learn about Maui’s fascinating history at a traditional luau. Or, you know, just skip all of that and sunbathe at the beach.

Whatever you do on Maui, try to catch an evening meal at Mama’s Fish House during sunset. One of the photos you take is sure to become your new screensaver.

Where to stay: Treat your mom to a stay in the lap of luxury at the Grand Wailea to make your trip extra splendid. If you’re traveling with the whole family, stay at the Hotel Wailea, a private paradise estate in Kihei so you can make meals together and relax in the comfort of a home setting.

Shamrocks and Smiles: Road Tripping Around Ireland

Cliffs of Moher
Ben Burger | Adobe Stock

Haven’t you always wanted to take a mother-daughter trip to Ireland? Want to kiss the Blarney Stone, drive the Ring of Kerry, or perhaps behold some sheep roaming lush green hills of the countryside? Take a road trip from Dublin that passes through Cork, Killarney, Dingle, and Galway, and you’ll delight in exploring these sights.

Visit the nearby town of Kinsale and take the easy hike to Charles Fort. Spend a day in Killarney National Park, and make time to visit the historic sites of Dingle before heading to the Cliffs of Moher and Galway, which is known for its traditional pubs and live Irish folk music.

Where to stay: Stop by the Hayfield Manor in Cork for a quintessentially Irish stay, complete with gourmet dining and afternoon tea service.

FAQ

Which Camera Bag is for Me?

This depends on what you plan on using your camera bag for, and how concerned you are about its look. If you are all about fashion, then the  Claremont Leather Camera Bag  or the Capri II from Ona are your best choices. Both look more like a purse than like a camera bag. If you are all about functionality, The Runner from Brevite or the Manfrotto Manhattan Runner-50 Camera Roller Bag will be best, as they are heavy-duty, and will hold all of your gear.

Can I Bring my Camera Bag on An Airplane?

As long as your camera bag fits the carry-on requirements of the airline you are flying, you can bring it! If you are going to keep your camera in your checked luggage, be aware that cameras with lithium batteries must be in your carry-on, as they can explode if not in the pressurized cabin.

Do I Really Need a Camera Bag?

Cameras are not cheap, so you should protect them as best you can, and a camera bag is a great way to do so. Not only will a camera bag keep your gear organized, but it will also keep your camera safe.

What Should I Keep in My Camera Bag?

It is up to you, depending on what you are planning on taking pictures of, and what type of gear you like to use. Some items you may want to keep in it are:

Intrepid

When Intrepid Travel launched women-only tours in 2018, the trips quickly became some of the company’s most popular journeys. After putting the Women’s Expeditions tour range on hiatus during COVID-19, the company has reintroduced the adventures, with a focus on countries that have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic.

Each Women’s Expedition trip is guided by local female tour leaders and offers unique opportunities to engage with women at the destination. On Intrepid Travel’s India: Women’s Expedition, guests will ride in female-only carriages on the metro, visit female artisans, and watch a special Kalbeliya dance performed by local women at a desert camp

These specialized polar rovers feature oversized windows along with see-through steel grate flooring, so you can observe the polar bears even as they are literally underneath you.

Natural Habitat Adventures runs women-only departures for this tour on select dates, which feature a female expedition leader and a women driver. These unique trips will offer an insight into women’s history in the Canadian Arctic, stories of women in Arctic exploration and science, and meetings with the women who run Arctic expeditions.

See the best of Scotland on the The Highlands Wilderness Retreat, where you’ll journey between some of the most beautiful spots in Cairngorms National Park, learning wilderness skills and participating in activities such as yoga and swimming.

With an itinerary involving walking 4 to 7 miles per day on various terrains and changes in elevation, you’re sure to make the most of all the park has to offer.
