Hiking Essentials: Gear

Backpack: A good backpack is key to a comfortable hiking trip. The right backpack for you will depend on personal fit and the length of your trip (along with how much you’ll be carrying.) For a short hike, pick a backpack that’s lightweight and big enough to hold all your hiking essentials, but not so big that you’re tempted to overpack. The Hyperlite Mountain Gear Daybreak Ultralight Daypack is one of the lightest daypacks out there, weighing in at just 1.26 pounds. The light weight doesn’t mean that important features are skimped on—it still has comfortable padded straps, a hip belt that can be stashed away, a water-resistant exterior, and a padded back panel. Trekking Poles: A good set of hiking poles can help save your knees from strain on the descent, and prevent slips and falls on tough terrain or muddy trails. Hiking Essentials: Footwear

Hiking Shoes: Low-top hiking shoes are lighter weight and more nimble than hiking boots. Danner’s Trail 2650 GTX shoes are designed to comfortably carry you no matter what distance you’re hiking. Even though they weigh just 18 oz. per pair, they are still waterproof, so you can trample through mud and streams without worry.

Hiking Boots: Opt for hiking boots over shoes when you’re facing a longer, tougher hike, or for those times when you’ll be carrying a heavier pack—like on an overnight trip. Hiking boots offer more ankle support, as well as additional protection from bites, scrapes, and water. Weighing an impressive 290 grams per shoe, these boots won’t slow you down on the trail.

Hiking Essentials: Clothing

Hiking Tights: Tights are a tempting choice for hikes. You probably already own something similar to these super-flexible leggings in your wardrobe for running or yoga, but a hiking version are designed to withstand the rigors of an intense hiking trail. Fjallraven’s Abisko Trekking Tights are tough enough for hiking thanks to a super durable four-way stretch fabric that has extra reinforcement over the rear and knees to protect your skin when you’re scrambling over rocks or sitting on the ground. Plus, unlike most leggings, these trekking tights come with plenty of pockets and are available in a men’s version as well.

Socks: Good socks are the key to comfortable hiking. They keep your feet dry, prevent blisters, and provide cushioning and warmth. These socks from Smartwool are made from upcycled nylon and merino wool, with a padded sock cushion for extra relief.

Hiking Pants: For serious backcountry hikes you’ll want some heavy-duty hiking pants, like Arcteryx’s Gamme LT Pant. These pants are lightweight, durable, and wind and water resistant. These pants are specially designed for women with a lower adjustable waist and a slim feminine silhouette.

Base Layer: For cold weather hikes, add a layer underneath your hiking pants with lululemon’s Fast and Free Tight, which are made from patented Nulux fabric that’s quick-drying and sweat-wicking, yet designed to feel like you’re not wearing anything at all. For trail running or less-intense hikes that don’t involve scrambling these can be worn alone.

Sunglasses: Enjoying the view at the summit means protecting your eyes with sunglasses like these options from Maui Jim. Opt for their wrap-around frames for full eye protection and scratch-resistant lenses to handle whatever the hiking trail throws at you.

Hiking Underwear: Your favorite delicates might be comfortable, but they aren’t immune from the wear of lengthy hiking trips. Look for underwear that’s moisture-wicking and odor-resistant, like these pairs from ExOfficio for both women and men. For women, Patagonia’s Switchback Sports Bra is a soft and supportive option that’s also quick-drying and won’t cause chafing.

Jacket: Even if it looks like it’s going to be a warm day, packing a jacket is always a good idea on hikes, especially ones with a summit above the tree line (where it can be significantly colder/windier than it is  at the base). The weather can change quickly: Prepare by bringing along a lightweight jacket like the Patagonia Nano Puff Hoody, available for both women and men, which delivers an impressive amount of warmth and wind-resistance for the weight.

Hat: You’ll want a hat to keep the sun off of your face, but a regular ball caps can get very sweaty after a while. Get a hat that’s made for activities and wicks away moisture, like Arc’teryx’s Calvus Cap.

Gloves: On chilly fall hikes or cool summer mornings, a pair of lightweight, waterproof gloves are essential. These picks for both men and women will keep you warm and dry, even in a sudden downpour.

Gaiters: Although not very fashionable, gaiters, waterproof covers that slip on over your boots to protect your ankles and calves from rain and mud, are very practical. I like this pair from Outdoor Research which easily slip on and off.

Participants will learn the four important BARK principals:

Upon completion of the course, dogs will earn the right to wear a special Bark Ranger collar tag that shows off their new important position with the NPS. 

Watch the First Sunrise in the United States, Acadia National Park

From October 7 to March 6, Cadillac Mountain is the first place in the country where the sun rises. Since you can drive to the summit of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park, this morning ritual is hugely popular, and you’ll need to make a vehicle reservation in advance in order to visit.

In the off-season, June through early September, sled dog demonstrations are held three times daily so visitors can witness this traditional Alaskan method of transportation.

Fossils & History at Hocking Hills State Park

Over 200 million years ago, an ancient ocean occupied the land that is now Hocking Hills. Sharp-eyed visitors can still spot marine life fossils high above sea level, embedded in the park’s characteristic black hand sandstone rock formations left behind as the water receded.

In the millions of years that followed, the region was home to many, including the people of the Adena culture, responsible for the incredible mounds built throughout Ohio, and the Wyandot people, who’s name for the river flowing through the region—hockhocking—inspired the name for the park. Hocking Hills State Park is established on the lands of the Shawnee, Delaware, and Wyandot people. 

In 1924, the State of Ohio purchased the first 146 acres of what would become modern day Hocking Hills State Park. Visitation rose throughout the 20th century, resulting in the over 3 million annual visitors that enjoy the park today.

Nature & Wildlife in Hocking Hills State Park

The 2,000 acres of Hocking Hills State Park are teeming with wildlife. Drive slowly down the park’s winding roads and you’re sure to catch a glimpse of a white-tailed deer returning your gaze from the edges of the forest. Listen to the hoots of barred owls as you hike the trails and keep your eyes peeled for the bright yellow chest of a Magnolia Warbler. 

There are a few residents of the park you won’t want to run into up close, however. Black bears and bobcats both call Hocking Hills home, although spotting the former has become rare in recent decades due to overhunting. 

Outdoor Recreation

Notable Trails

Each of the seven main trails in Hocking Hills has its own unique history and landscape. 

• Ash Cave: Named for the large piles of ash uncovered by settlers when first encountering the cave. (Length: 1.5 miles)
• Old Man’s Cave:  Named after and, according to many, haunted by the reclusive settler who lived in the cave in the late 18th century. (Length: 1 to 1.5 miles depending on the chosen trail.)
• Whispering Cave: One of the longer trails in the park, hikers will encounter a swinging bridge, steep stairways, and platforms overlooking stunning views. (Length: 5 miles)
• Rock House: Despite many trail names suggesting otherwise, Rock House is the only true cave in Hocking Hills. (Length: 1 mile)
• Cedar Falls: Follow the trail branching off from Old Man’s Cave to see Cedar Falls, a spectacular 50-foot waterfall. (Length: ½ mile)
• Conkle’s Hollow: Choose between the Upper Trail (2 miles) or the Lower Trail (Length: ¾ miles long and wheelchair accessible) to explore the cliffs and caverns of Conkle’s Hollow.
• Cantwell Cliffs: The most rigorous hike in the park, the two loops of Cantwell Cliffs will bring hikers through remote wilderness, up and down winding stone steps, and through the narrow corridors of rock. (Length: 2 miles)

Touch the Earth Adventures

Touch the Earth Adventures, founded by Mimi Morrison in 1984, is a guide service dedicated to reconnecting guests with nature. Participants are encouraged to take a break from a society that is, according to Mimi, “focused on fast and forward.” The company’s day- or weekend-long programs are a whole mind-and-body experience, with itineraries including moonlight kayaking, poetry reading, beaver-watching, hiking, and mindfulness exercises. Canoeing and Kayaking

Get out on the water and explore with one of the many canoeing and kayaking tours available throughout Hocking Hills. Popular paddling areas include the Hocking River, Lake Logan, and Lake Hope.

Stargaze at John Glenn Astronomy Park

The John Glenn Astronomy park, named after the first American astronaut to orbit earth, invites visitors to take advantage of the park’s lack of light pollution to experience the wonders of the night sky. Visit to simply gaze at the uninterrupted view of the stars or participate in one of their pre-planned programs, from constellation spotting to viewings of the full moon. Make sure to take advantage of their telescope for a better look!

Hocking Hills Orchard

Derek Mills, founder and owner of Hocking Hills Orchard and long-time apple enthusiast, invites guests to explore the more than 1,700 varieties of apples grown on his property. Sample one of his three varieties that taste eerily like bananas or marvel at an Arkansas Black apple, named for its deep purple-red skin. A true expert, Derek is always ready to fill guests in on the history of everyone’s favorite fruit, from the location of the first apples in America (Roxbury, Massachusetts) to George Washington’s favorite variety (the Newton Pippin).

Peak picking times are the second and third week of September. 

Glass Blowing at Jack Pine Studios

Get in touch with your inner artist with a glass blowing class at Jack Pine Studios in nearby Logan, Ohio. Participants are guided through every step of the process, from heating the molten glass in the forge to shaping the final details. The studio offers group sessions starting at $49 per person and private lessons starting at $195.

Moonshine Tasting

For travelers bored of typical wine tastings, try a sampler of moonshine at Hocking Hills Moonshine. This distillery offers unique flavors such as peach tea, granny apple, and blackberry. Hardcore enthusiasts can try a shot of Buckeye Thunder, a 151 proof Hocking Hills original—just make sure you have a designated driver to corral the group back to the hotel afterwards.

Hit the Golf Course

Hocking Hills Golf Club in Logan is just a short drive from the park. Play a round while enjoying the beautiful scenery, then hit the Pro Shop or the course’s onsite restaurant, The Urban Grille,  for lunch.

Previously, national parks only required reservations for certain popular trails, attractions, or camping. However, some popular parks have decided to require reservations (in the form of advance ticket sales) just to enter the gates this summer, in order to better preserve these ecological landmarks.

Tips for National Park Reservations

• Plan ahead: peak times (like weekends) will likely sell out quickly, so check to see when tickets will go on sale and be ready to book.
• Remember that the time zone for ticket releases are in the park’s local time, so be sure to set your clock accordingly.
• Create an account on recreation.gov and save all your information before tickets go on sale. This will let you check out quickly once it’s time to buy tickets, which can be crucial for getting a coveted reservation. 
• Check with the individual park’s website directly through the National Park Service to find out any advance requirements for entry or activities.

Here are the national parks that are currently requiring reservations:

Acadia National Park

Although Acadia National Park isn’t requiring reservations to enter the park, you will need a ticket if you want to visit one of the most popular attractions—Cadillac Mountain Summit Road. You can hike up to this scenic spot without a ticket, but you’ll need one to drive up from May 24 through October 22. 

Tickets cost $4 per vehicle, and can be purchased here. Daytime and sunrise tickets are available and pass holder can begin their drive any time within 90 minutes of the time shown on the ticket. From May 24 through July 1st, reservations will only be available to purchase two days in advance of the reservation date to accommodate the road’s repaving schedule. From July 1st through October 22nd, 30 percent of the times will be available to purchase 90 days before the reservation date, while the remaining 70 percent of tickets will be opened up for purchase two days before the reservation date. 

Glacier National Park

To get almost anywhere inside Glacier National Park, you’ll need to drive along the Going-to-the-Sun Road. However, from May 26 to September 10, you’ll need to purchase a $2 per vehicle entry ticket (in addition to the standard Glacier National Park site pass) to drive along the road. The majority of tickets will be released 60 days in advance on recreation.gov, with the remaining being released two days in advance of the entry date. Didn’t snag a ticket? Reservations are only required for Going-to-the-Sun Road between the hours of 6am to 3pm. 

Haleakala National Park

The summit of Haleakala volcano is such a popular place to watch the sunrise, that the park has been requiring reservations well before the pandemic, and this year is no different. Reservations will be required for each vehicle entering the park from 3am-7am. Reservations can be made up to 60 days in advance on recreation.gov, and cost $1. No advance tickets are needed to enter the park after 7am. 

Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park is implementing a new timed entry permit reservation system for visits beginning on May 26. Two types of permits will be available: Bear Lake Road Corridor (which includes the entire park as well) or a general park permit (excludes the Bear Lake Road Corridor area).

Reservations began on May 1, and are needed to enter the park between May 26 through October 22. More reservations will be released on the 1st of each month at 8am MDT, and 40 percent of tickets will be held for purchase at 5pm MDT the day prior to the visit date. Tickets are free and available on recreation.gov, but there is a $2 non-refundable “reservation fee” per vehicle.

Arches National Park

From April 1 to October 21, visitors must make reservations to visit Arches National Park between the hours of 7am and 4pm. Tickets are on a per vehicle basis and, like Rocky Mountain National Park, are available for just the $2 processing fee from recreation.gov.

Reservations can be purchased 3 months ahead of the reservation date at 8am MT, meaning reservations for April will be available in January, reservations for May will be available in February, and so on.

Some tickets will remain available for purchase at 6pm MT one day prior to the listed reservation date, but these are in high-demand and tend to be snatched up quickly.

Shenandoah National Park

While visitors can still access Shenandoah National Park with just the standard park entrance pass, now through November 30th guests must purchase an additional day-use pass to hike in areas on and around Old Rag Mountain between the hours of 12pm and 12am.

Tickets are $1 per person and must be purchased online or over the phone—no tickets are available for purchase at the park. Of the 800 daily tickets available, half will be available for purchase within 30 days of the reservation date and the remaining half will be available 5 days prior to the reservation date. Tickets are limited to 4 per person.

This small island off the coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is known for its white-sand beaches, colorful marine life, and the Mayan ruins of San Gervasio. While you can fly directly to Cozumel from a handful of U.S. airports, including Dallas and Charlotte, you can often save hundreds of dollars by flying to Cancún instead and then taking a ferry to Cozumel from nearby Playa del Carmen.

Flights to Cancún from most major U.S. airports can be found in the $300-$400 range regularly throughout the year, with many fares falling below the $300 mark.

You’ll likely find cheaper hotel nightly rates between August and November. (Note that this falls within Caribbean hurricane season).

Where to Stay: Find private beach access, tennis courts, an on-site spa and salon, and even children’s activities at InterContinental Presidente Cozumel Resort & Spa with prices starting at around $300 per night. If your seeking an adults-only resort, Ventanas al Mar offers standard rooms for a low as $160 per night.

Jamaica

Eco-adventurers will find plenty to do in Jamaica, from swimming in waterfalls to zip-lining through the rainforest. Only-in-Jamaica spots to visit include the Bob Marley Museum and the Rastafari Indigenous Village. And, of course, there are plenty of beaches to relax on between excursions.

With three main tourist areas—Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, and Negril—you can price-shop for the best rates for your Caribbean vacation. Again, travel between May and October may offer lower rates because of hurricane season.

Where to Stay: For an all-inclusive stay, try Riu Negril, with rates starting at $146 per night.

Puerto Rico

In Puerto Rico, you can split your vacation between the lush El Yunque Rainforest, the island’s wide sandy beaches, and the vibrant streets of Old San Juan. A boat trip into one of the island’s bioluminescent bays is another must-do.

Fares from major East Coast airports to San Juan are consistently low, with many round-trip options coming in at less than $200. Fares from departure airports further west remain reasonable, with options below $300.

It’s easy to budget for expenses in Puerto Rico, as the local currency is the U.S. dollar. Bonus: You don’t need to pay for a passport to get there. And with a variety of hotel options all over the island, it’s not hard to find one in your price range.

Where to Stay: The laid-back, beachfront San Juan Water and Beach Club is a convenient jumping-off point for trips to El Yunque or San Juan, with rates starting around $200 a night.

Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is probably the cheapest Caribbean island to visit if you’re looking for affordable all-inclusive deals. You’ll find dozens of packages in Punta Cana on CheapCaribbean.com, with prices such as $940 per person for air and three nights’ accommodations. Activities in the area include snorkeling, zip-lining, and off-road ATV tours through the jungle. You can also go hiking and swim in clear lagoons at the Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park & Reserve.

You’ll have plenty of popular resort areas in the Dominican Republic in which to compare prices, including La Romana, Puerto Plata, and Samana.

Where to Stay: The Tropical Deluxe Princess All Inclusive offers a beachfront all-inclusive experience for as little as $198 per night.

Curaçao

You can’t go wrong with a visit to the “C” of the ABC Islands, especially during the spring or fall shoulder season, when you’ll find even more savings. And since Curaçao falls outside of the hurricane belt, you can book a trip here without worrying about the storm season. Whether you visit for the numerous festivals or the pleasant beach weather year-round, on a Caribbean visit to Curaçao you’ll fall in love with the local food trucks, colorful Dutch architecture, unparalleled snorkel spots, and secret beaches.

With nonstop flight options from major U.S. cities like Newark, New York’s JFK, and Miami, Curaçao is highly accessible from the East Coast.

Where to stay: The island has plenty of hotel inventory with competitive nightly rates. Check out ACOYA Curaçao Resort, Villas, & Spa in downtown Willemstad, which starts around $114 per night. Or try the Sunscape Curaçao Resort, Spa, & Casino, also located in Willemstad with nightly rates starting around $230.

In order to keep certain parts of America’s park system from getting overrun with visitors, some parks have instituted a lottery system for entrance. Here are some of the best worth trying your luck at.

Coyote Buttes North Lottery

The Wave is a surreal-looking natural sandstone rock formation that undulates across the desert landscape of Coyote Buttes. In order to protect this fragile formation, only 64 people are allowed to visit it each day, with 48 individual permits (and/or 12 group permits) being given away in advance in an online lottery and the remaining 16 individual permits (and/or 4 group permits) drawn during a daily lottery. Applicants must pay a nonrefundable $9 fee each time they apply (and can only enter the lottery once each month) and can choose up to three potential visitation dates per month. The lottery is run four months ahead, so if you want to visit the Wave in May, apply in January. If you win, the permit cost is $7 per person, and you’ll receive a route map with photos of landmarks and GPS coordinates to help you find your way along the 6.4-mile backcountry hike to the Wave.

Fun fact: The Wave’s popularity is in part due to its feature as desktop wallpaper on Windows 7, which gave cubicle-dwellers everywhere something to dream about while trapped at their desks.

Private Grand Canyon Rafting Trip Lottery

Want to raft down the Grand Canyon, but don’t want your experience ruined by a terrible guide or annoying tour groups? Apparently a lot of people feel the same way, as permits for 12- to 25-day self-guided raft trips from Lees Ferry to Diamond Creek formerly had a 27-year waitlist. In 2006, the NPS decided that the insanely long waiting list would be replaced by a lottery.

This weighted lottery gives preference to those who were on the old waitlist, as well as people who have not been rafting on the Colorado River recently.

The main lottery is held once a year during the first three weeks in February, and follow-up lotteries are held throughout the year to reassign spots from any cancelled trips. There is $25 fee to apply for the lottery and, for winners, a $200-$400 trip deposit, a $20 entrance fee, and $90/person river permit.

Guided Bear Viewing at McNeil River State Game Sanctuary and Refuge

In the summer, up to 144 wild brown bears a day descend on McNeil River State Game Sanctuary and Refuge to fish for the thousands of salmon that swim past during their upstream migration. Can’t bear to miss that? Enter the lottery and you might be one of the lucky 10 people per day that are allowed to view the spectacle between June and August.

The program limits the number of people who may be present at McNeil River Falls (or the other viewing locations) to no more than 10 individuals, so as not to disturb the bears. If you win one of the 185 permits available, you’ll be allowed to camp at the campground, visit the sanctuary, and attend guided bear viewing sessions over a designated four-day period.

Half Dome Cables Lottery

A 14-mile hike seems tough enough to weed out most people, but not at Yosemite’s most famous attraction, Half Dome. Despite the fact that this incredibly hard hike involves scrambling up steep granite domes using steel cables and wooden planks as makeshift stairs to reach the summit, the hike attracts hundreds of visitors every year.

The steel cables are only up from late May to mid-October, and may be taken down early or put up late due to weather conditions. During this season, only 225 daily permits (225 for hikers and 75 for backpackers) are issued to summit Half Dome.

The lottery runs March 1 through March 31, and you designate a specific date or range of dates you would like to climb. Feeling spontaneous? Around 50 permits are made through a daily lottery that you can enter two days before your chosen hiking date. You’ll pay $10 to enter the lottery and $10 for a permit if you’re successful.

Phantom Ranch Lottery

Phantom Ranch is one of the most exclusive accommodations in the world, and it’s not because of the cost (which starts at a very reasonable $65 per person for a dorm room). Located at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, Phantom Ranch is only accessible by hiking or riding a mule the approximately 7.5 miles down, or by rafting in via the Colorado River.

The ranch recently changed its reservation system to a lottery system, which can be entered here. Occasionally, a few beds will open up due to cancellation, and those can be searched for here.

The lottery is even more exclusive this year, as the dormitories traditionally reserved for hikers are close until further notice (private cabins are still available).

The lottery is held monthly between the 1st and 25th and runs 15 months ahead (so entries made in January 2021 will be for reservations in March 2022.) Unlike most of the other lotteries, this one is free to enter.
